Tip: Earning Cash On A New Player

As one of the steps in preparing to do a serious upgrade of the Runescape Newbie Guide site, I'm going through all of the comments that are in need of moderation. I'm down to 606 comments left, out of the 1080 that existed when I started wheedling down recently.

There was a great tip by Uncle Vernon that I just published to the "Starting A New Character" posting, I'd like to share it, as it's a way for a brand new character to make 10-15k without having to deal with selling to other players:

One of the easiest ways to make money is killing chickens by Varrock or Lumbridge;

1)collect about 500 feathers
2)collect 20 raw chickens
3) bury all your bones

go to port sarim and cook all chicken (raise cooking) eat them or sell them by the wilderness later, now for "the real money"; go to fishing shop and value feathers they stay from 1 gold to 4 gold, when they are 3 or 4 gold sell them 10 at a time with 500 feathers you can: make 15 to 20k, raise a little combat, and the most important... raise cooking level!!!

Tutorial Island And What You Can Leave With by Epza

One of the most commented-on articles on the Runescape Newbie Guide blog is the one about Starting A New Character. The comments are there mainly because I made some errors in my recommendations and some friendly folk were helping me to fix it. One of the best comments on the topic was by someone who used a player name "Epza" to test out Tutorial Island fully and reported back on their results:

NOTE! I didn't write this part that follows, this was from a comment on my blog that I thought was great and wanted to share as a post of its own.

"Epza, the character (toon) I used, was created solely for the purpose of checking the limits and boundrys of Runescape's Training Island. What follows are my findings.

On the Runescape Training Island, you can NOT go higher in any skill than level three (3). Not even one point higher. On the training island all skills are capped at level three (3).

You can melee kill as many rats as you want, and you don't even have to use food to heal with because you will never go below one (1) hitpoint. In otherwords, you won't die fighting rats on Training Island.

You can collect all the inventory items you want while on the island, but when you leave the island you will end up on the mainland with the following items in your inventory:

one bronze wood cutting axe
one tinder box
one small fishing net
one cooked shrimp
one bucket
one pot
one cooked bread
one pickaxe
one bronze dagger
one bronze sword
one wooden shield
one short bow
twenty five (25) arrows
twenty five (25) air runes
fifteen (15) body runes
six (6) water runes
four (4) earth runes
two (2) body runes

and in the mainland banks you will find:

twenty five (25) coins

Any stockpiles you made to your inventory, regardless of whether you stockpiled arrows, shrimp, bread, bronze bars or whatever, will NOT reach the mainland with you. You will get exactly that which I listed above and not a bit more.

Fishing skill-ups are a little faster on Training Island than on the mainland, and so are fire skill-ups, but leveling attack, strength, and defense are slower because you hit less often than you would with either normal rats or chickens on the mainland. This same slowness could apply to ranged, but killing chickens with free runes from the wizard might be worth considering.

But truthfully, my recommendation would have to be not to waste your time on Training Island. On Training Island you can't get loot to make money with. In the low level mainland areas, you can get loot from your kills, and loot from the kills of other players who just leave it on the ground.

And one last thing, the very easiest and quickest way for a "newbie," at least on the f2p (free to play) servers, to earn money is probably one of the most boring. It works like this:

Step 1) You get the "Rune Mysteries Quest" from Duke Horacio on the 2nd floor of the castle. (The castle you ended up in front of when came off Training Island.) You take the talisman the duke gives you to the head wizard, Sedridor, in the Wizards Tower south of Draynor Village. Sedridor wants you to take a package to Aubury, the owner of a rune shop in north east Varrock, and gives you directions to Varrock. (In the last update, Runescape made the barbarians hostile and they will now aggro newbies, so if you can't figure out how to avoid their village, don't walk through it, run.) When you find Aubury, keep in mind where he's located, and that there is a bank just north of him. Aubury gives you his notes and asks you to give them to Sedridor. Take them to Sedridor and in return he gives you the privilage of being teleported to the rune essence stones via various npc's.

Step 2) The the boring, but rewarding part. Go to the bank and store everything but your pickaxe. Wield your pickaxe. Your inventory should now be empty, the pickaxe in your hand. Go to one of the teleportation npc's and get teleported to the rune essence stones. Mine the essence (ess), fill your inventory, then use the teleportation device back to the teleporting npc. Next, go to the bank and store the twenty eight (28) ess you've mined. Now go back to the teleporting npc and repeat this operation thirty five (35) times. (I said it was boring.) 8-)

NOTE: Don't try to sell until you have at least 1000 ess. Buyers don't like piddly amounts, and you can always take breaks if it gets to boring. Oh, I almost forgot, you should be able to sell your one thousand (1000) ess for thirty thousand (30,000) if your patient--most likely to just a single buyer. If you are willing to sell for less, don't let them get you down to low, because there are buyers that will turn around and sell the thousand essences's they bought from you for 35,000.

Catching up on 1000+ blog comments

Blog comments are fun to go through.

Some are great! I've approved a great number of comments today and they now appear in the comments section of the various posts they were posted to. I especially like the friendly comments from other blog owners - when I update this site, I'll be setting up cross-linkings with some of the ones with quality content.

Some are spam - runescape gold, runescape scams disguised as helpful sites, etc. I'm sure the spammers don't really care that they get comments rejected on some sites, as their modus operandi is "spam lots, all over the place" and even a %.01 return rate on their spamming is enough of a reward for them.

Some comments, however, are well-meaning people who are probably a little frustrated, and their frustration is coming across in their attempted communications with me.

Like the guy who hadn't looked at the most recent postings on the blog to realize it hadn't been updated in over 8 months when he said, exasperated:

dude wtf top blocking all my comments and stop trying to make people thing thoughs are yur runescape stats

All ridiculousness and jest aside, I'd like to let and commenters know that I don't ignore them, exactly - but I've left this blog unattended for a while and have a lot of work to do to clear out the backlog of comments. So, if I haven't answered your question, it is likely that I haven't gotten to it in the comments yet.

And of course, because of all the spammers that abound, all of the comments in this blog need to be approved by me before they show up on the site. If the world were full of people who don't try to clog the system up for the rest of us, I wouldn't have to do this.

But it has to be said - why do my character stats threaten you so? Certainly there are many players much higher level in everything than me now? And what "accomplishment" exactly is it for me to have wasted so much time to level all those silly skills? :) :)

Finding a Job in Runescape

One of the main things people leave notes about in my blog is about "getting a job" on Runescape to allow them to earn some cash for their decently-leveled players so that cash can be turned around and turned into the expensive, cool, unique equipments that float around from all the various sources.

How I Found Workers

When I was playing regularly, I started out as a "solo" player who would collect all of my own materials and process them all and then use them up. I became a Member partially because I wanted to make my own arrows instead of buying them, and for the first while, I was happy with this. Cash was accumulating because I mined my own ore, blacksmithed the results, and took pains to sell them in small doses to shops on different worlds to get as much cash as I could.

At some point, however, I ran across someone who offered to do some mining for me, or some wood chopping, to speed up my creation and levelling processes. Ken was 11 years old and AMAZING at making deals with others - he became my middle-man. I'd tell Ken what I wanted and how much I'd pay for it (note, I always pay well compared to the market, it's part of why Ken would work so eagerly for me), and he'd go out and buy materials for cheaper than that, and resell it to me.

Then, Ken stopped playing for a while, but I had become addicted to having someone else do a lot of collection work FOR me so I could just produce product, sell it, and get bigger, stronger and better, faster.

So, I had to find other workers.

Truthfully, I find going to a busy bank and calling out that I'm looking for a worker to gather wood in lots of 100 will get me a LOT of responses. From the "employer" end, there's no shortage of workers.

From the worker end? I could only choose one. So, how did I go about choosing?

Traits I'd Look For In Workers

Generally I am not going to have a forever-ongoing need for any one commodity on the game (logs, ore, fish), so the first thing I'd look for in an ongoing "job" situation would be for the person to have high skills in the following:

Mining
Woodcutting
Fishing

At the very least, be able to mine coal and fish lobsters. Most of the logs I'd be buying off of you would be regular low-level logs for fletching into arrows, but many players would buy up every bit of Yew you have if you can advance that far and get into Members areas.

The second big thing I'd look for in a worker is the ability to sell product in lots of at least 500 at a time. Some things I'll buy in lots of 100 at a time if I absolutely must, but if I have 5 people providing 100 at a time and find one new guy who's willing to provide 500 at a time, those other 5 people are out of a "job" with me. Thus, before you offer to sell anything, gather up at least 500 of that product if at all possible, with 100 being a bare minimum.

Finding Buyers On The Web

Forums are another place you could turn to in order to sell your wares or buy wares from others - here are a few sites I found when I searched on Google this morning:

Get A PK Noob Going Quickly

Here's a great comment that I just approved on the post about The Wilderness, aka "wildy":

Hey I have some tips for new players for the Wild(lvl 3 players). First, sell all the stuff you start out with. make sure you go to the specialty shops to do this. then you should have enough for bronze pl8 and legs. Then buy a bronze or iron weapon. Then get defence and attack to 5. then unequip everything and go into the Wild. Make sure no one follows you. Stay away from mosnters and run through the graveyard. You should find a steel dagger. equip it. Next find some ruins and get steel legs that are there. Also theres gold ore there. Then speed back to non-wild area. There now uyou have steel legs and a dagger an money from selling the gold ore.

Excellent advice! And since some of those things reset, by doing it every time you can, you'll earn a bit of extra cash as well, which is always important!!

Mage Training Minigame strategy by Drawrof

"I spent some time in the Mage Training minigame. In particular I went to the Alchemist Playground. I took a fire staff and 100 natures. What I thought would be a short trip ended up lasting a long time. Here was my stategy.

1 - Casting High Alchemy gains 65 experience.
2 - Waiting for "Green Arrow" allows for all of that indicated item to be converted for free.
3 - I would accumulate 8 of a particular item, those that had not been given the green arrow lately.
4 - Every now and then I would convert 30 without the arrow.
5 - the items are sorted in the cupboards in clockwise order, according to the list (Boots, Kite, Helm, Emerald, Long) So if you are looking for a long and you find a helm, more 2 cupboards to the right and you will find the long.
6 - do not save coins for big deposit. Your computer may crash and you will lose all the coins. Therefore it is best to continue to deposit.
7 - although Im level 69 mage, this method is best for a level 21 member mage. The money that you collect for low alch compare to high alch is the same. Therefore the magic bonus of 2 times the money deposited is the same.

Result.

With only 100 Natures I was able to deposit over 10,000 gp. Averaging about 10 gp per cast, or 1000 high alchs.

total Experience:
1000 High Alchs- 65,000
10,000 gp X 2 - 20,000 bonus
total 85,000

Yes you do not get the gps of high alching mith armor. However, most mages high alch at a loss. This method takes discipline and sometime. However, you can cast an infinate number of alch spells with only 1 nature rune and 5 fire runes in your inventory.

This makes mage advancement abosolutely free after level 21 for all members. If you were to do the same for low alch at level 21, you could be level 45 in one after noon. try it out."

Wow! Excellent, I'm always into free skill levelling, myself! Great way to save cash is to not spend it after all.

Reader Tip: Powerlevelling your PK character

"its pretty simple if u wanna b good pker.

a)fish. skip sardines, pike, and tuna when training. when u can fish lobbies, get about 100 cooked and sell for 25-30k

b)buy tons and tons of bronze and iron arrows with the money.

c)kill chickens untill ur range is 10, then go to cows untill 20, then go to barbarians untill it is 30(make sure to bury all bones u get). now here comes the big money

d)get a brass key and go to the hill giants. there are multiple ranger spots that you can use. make sure to train on rapid, keep ONLY THE BIG BONES and expensive runes(natures, laws, deaths, chaos)

e)sell all your big bones when you run out of arrows. they sell from 300-410 each. buy more arrows and get more big bones, do that untill u got 60-70 range( i recommend 70)

f) buy as many rune ess as u can in world 1-4. ull hav like 2-3 mil at least so u shouldnt hav to worry about prices too much

g)do runes mysteries, and start making airs until u get 17 runecrafting. then, make minds until u get 22 rc(make sure to use edgeville bank for mind runes), then airs untill 28 rc, minds until 33 rc, airs until 39 rc, minds until 44 rc, and so on until u run out of ess

h)get mage to 13, then start using fire strike at hill giants. if u feel like it, then u can go to the leser demons and kill from there, but make sure u got good connection, food, and not too many runes(keep it at 500 minds and 1k airs per trip)

i)ull hav tons of money, so use it. i suggest gettin all the deaths and addy arrows that u can. get some ess also so u can make airs and fires.

j) now heres the fun part...owning every1 in sight! bring teleport varrok runes, binds, 100 fire blasts, and 100 addy arrows in ur inventory. here is the suit u gotta wear to walk on every1:

helm: blue mage hat
sheild:none
ammy: power ammy, glory ammy for p2p
shirt: blue mage top
pants: best d-hide chaps u can wear
weapon: best shortbow that u can use

find sum1 with full rune in the wilderness in a less crowded world, but make sure that he is max 10 lvls higher than u( i suggest varrok wildy, they like to go ther). now, most of the time, he will attk u. bind him once and run. u will weigh about 20 kg and the full rune person about 45 kg, so he will run out of energy fast. when he starts walking, you start walking also. keep taking him deeper and deeper and start ranging him down. this is where multiple binds are useful. when ranging him down, also use fire blasts every 2 range hits. if he starts running, then bind him. there are rarely any full rune peeps taht can "run" from u. they like always die

"Buy an air staff, lots of chaos runes and lots and lots of earths. Go to Varrock sewers and use the crumble undead spell on the skeletons, they drop chaos runes so you can stay ages. I got my mage up from 39 to 50 in one night!!!"

Great little tip for non-members, since Chaos runes are a difficult drop to find!

Runescape Hacking: Avoiding Keyloggers and Protecting your Runescape details

This is Part One of keeping your Online Gaming Accounts safe. This entry applies to everything online that requires a password to gain access - not just games. Email accounts, Online Gambling accounts, Online Banking accounts - anything you log into over the Internet can be subject to attack by hackers. The more you know about the scams in place, the safer you and your online accounts are.

Spyware, Keylogging "trojan" programs on your computer and even your own wish to 'fast track' your advancement are serious threats when it comes to the privacy of your personal information, and security of your online gaming characters.

The three major ways you'll find your online accounts 'hacked into' include:

Visiting a 'rogue' website that exploits flaws in Internet Explorer and plants a keylogger or password sniffer on your computer without your awareness (note, anyone who uses your computer could do this unknowingly).

Having your trust abused by unscrupulous individuals who claim to work for the company providing the online service and then demand your username and password with a threat of banishment

Purposely giving out your account information (username and password) with the hopes of being able to "hack" the system yourself, usually to gain virtual items, money or levels without following the "usual" route.

Avoid Known Browser Exploits - Use Firefox, Not Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is the world's most popular browser for those who use Microsoft Windows as their operating system, specifically because Internet Explorer comes installed with Windows computers, and most users (especially novice ones) won't think to replace or even upgrade it. Unfortunately, because IE is so popular, and because so few users keep their software up-to-date, many hackers have focused their time developing programs and websites to exploit Internet Explorer's known flaws. There are a LOT of browser exploits out there.

While all Windows users should visit WindowsUpdate.com once a month to catch up on Microsoft's various security updates for the entire Operating System, Internet Surfers who wish to protect their online information should strongly consider moving away from Internet Explorer.

Scan For Spyware And Keyloggers Regularly

While replacing a highly-targetted-for-hacking browser with one less focused on is an important first step, it's also important to acknowledge that hackers are constantly releasing new software and websites and trying new tricks to steal your online accounts from you. For this reason, you should be scanning your computer on a regular basis (at least once a month) to detect and remove spyware, data harvesters and keyloggers from your Windows PC.

Download Lavasoft's Ad Aware SE (for your home computer, there's a free version). Then, make sure all aspects of it are updated (when you first download it, there may still be updates you need to download immediately after installation) and then let it scan your drives. This may take a while if you, like me, have large drives. It's worth the wait but you might want to let it scan overnight if you've never scanned before. Remove *ALL* of the things that Ad Aware SE finds. You may have to right-click the list and choose "select all" before proceeding if you have a long list. I had a friend with over 700 items in this list the first time we cleaned his computer up, and once they were all removed, his browsing sped up tremendously again.

Download Spyware Search & Destroy (these can both be found in Tucows directory) and do the same things as were done for Ad Aware in the previous paragraph. I find that these two programs work nicely together to keep my drive clean, with my doing weekly scans.

Never PURPOSELY Share Your Account Information Or Password

Any web link you get from an email that brings you to a page where you're supposed to enter sensitive information like your credit card, bank info or passwords, don't do it! Banks and other service providers would NEVER contact you that way.

Any instructions you receive about sending an email with specific details enclosed (usually under the guise of "I can upgrade your stats/equipment/cash" if you just follow these instructions...), examine the information carefully - if you're sending out your username and password, they're stealing your account!

Even just giving out your username can encourage hacking of your account at times. If your username is not already visible to others, don't give it to anyone, as they may try to crack your password with brute force (ie: a program that has a list of dictionary words it uses as passwords in login attempts).

Be Careful What Addons And Hacks You Download

While some online games allow for third-party software to be "added on" to improve your enjoyment of the game, some games do not. RuneScape, for example, has no legitimate addons which do not violate the Terms of Service you agreed upon when signing up, and very often any addons you'll download are actually keyloggers that enable someone else to steal your account entirely.

Games like World of Warcraft, however, have a thriving "UI Mod/Addons" community and many advanced users download and install .LUA scripts which work with WoW to change launch bars, introduce in-game schedulers, track information while gaming, etc. In this case, the general rule is this:

If the Addon you're downloading contains an executable file (in the form of a .bat file or a .exe or .com file), be very careful about running it. Executable files can easily contain keyloggers specifically added to steal your account information.

Keep Your Virus Checker Up To Date

And finally, as is standard these days, get a virus scanner that runs on your machine all the time it's on, and make sure the virus scanner keeps up to date. I personally use Norton with its LiveUpdate feature, but you may prefer something else, or your computer may prefer something else ;) I've had virus programs severely slow down my machine's performance and even crash it, while on other machines that virus program works just fine. Do what works, and what doesn't cause you headaches, and then make sure it scans at least once a month.

Keep your computer clean. It's an important step in protecting your personal, private information from those of unscrupulous internet users!

Configurations you may appreciate

In setting up a new character, I noticed that some of the configuration settings aren't what I'd call "optimal". There aren't many config settings at all, so this entry should be short, and should be nothing to fear for those who are afraid of "configuring" things.

The configuration icon is the wrench tool to the right of the LOG OUT button at the bottom right of the Runescape screen. Click on that icon and you should see the few things that can be altered:

Screen Brightness

I always like to have my games on V-Bright. Probably because my monitors always seem dark.

Mouse Button

If you only have a one-button mouse, you can let the game know here. Otherwise, just leave it as it is, at two-button.

Chat Effects

If you don't like to see people talking in color or in 'wavey' format, you can shut off the Chat Effects. Personally, I like the color etc, so I keep my chat effects on.

Split Private-chat

I personally like to keep my public and private chats seperate on the screen, especially when the chats scroll off quickly in the public chat as it is. I change Split Private-chat from Off to On, so then my private chats appear above the public chats area instead, and aren't scrolled off by my activities.

Accept Aid

This gives "permission" for other players to teleport you from your current location to wherever their teleports allow them to teleport others. It's more important to have this configured when you're a PK player, but if you have someone being annoying and teleporting you to where you're lost, you can shut off their power with this configuration

Fighting in Runescape: Where To Start

Even if you wish to eventually be an all-powerful Mage or Archerin Runescape, I strongly recommend all low-level players start with developing Attack, Strength and Defense skills, which are all improved by fighting in hand-to-hand combat, with some kind of sword, scimitar, dagger, maul, or whatever it is you're going to bash your opponent to death with. Advancing magic and ranger skills are expensive, but having a good solid melee combat base will allow you time to collect runes and arrows in between your bouts as a Ranger or a Mage.

Now that you've got some fighting equipment (and if you don't, Get Chopping wood and contact me!), let's talk about great places to get started against opponents!

Goblins, Lvl 2

In Lumbridge, and between Lumbridge and Draynor Village (where the nearest bank is), there are a number of level 2 goblins running around. They are non-aggressive (meaning, they don't initiate battles when you walk by them) and drop runes as well as low-level armors, as well as bones and coins. The low-level armors can be sold at the shop to build up your money stores, and the runes can be stored in your bank account for use when you decide to practice your magical skills.

Chickens and Cows, Lvl 2

To the northeast of Lumbridge, across the river from where you originally started the game (and where you re-start if you die), there are not only goblins, but chickens and cows as well.

These areas were discussed in a previous entry about aquiring food on Runescape without begging, but at that time I was focussing my attention on picking up raw beef and raw chickens that other players have left behind in their own battles.

This time, the attention is on being among those players slaying the poor innocent farm animals for experience, adventure, and glory!

Chickens also offer a bonus that was not discussed earlier - feathers, which are used in fly fishing and, if you're a member, in fletching for the creation of arrows. Keep those feathers around, since you never know when you might need them or could sell them for up to 10gp a feather!

Cows also offer a bonus in that they drop cow hides which are used to improve the Crafting skill, but the hides don't "stack" the same way the feathers do and your inventory fills up rather quickly, meaning lots of trips to the bank. However, just like in collecting raw beef from what other players have killed, you can collect cow hides and make that, instead of fighting the cows, your specific goal. It's likely you can sell each cow hide for 10-20 gold once you've collected 100 or more.

Giant Rats, lvl 3

Just to the west (outside) of Lumbridge Castle is an area with a few level 3 giant white rats, and a few level 1 mice running around. Mainly, you get raw rat meat and bones from these rats, but occasionally you may luck out and receive a rat tail. It's important to know where rat meat is as at least one quest asks for it, but I much prefer the previous opponents due to the better "drops" they offer.

Other non-grouped monsters

In Lumbridge there are a couple level 4 Women who reset in the houses. In general, Women and Men are great opponents to start against, and they offer decent "drops" including occasional clues to treasure trails!! For this reason you may find competition stiff for the Men and Women on Runescape.

What dream world are you living in that you think you're lvl 126? What are you doing on a "Newbie Guide" site doing anything but offering helpful advice? Oh, right - being fearful of getting hacked yet _still leaving a note_. Here's a Runescape-related article that might be helpful to you, but you might also want to consider this article, too about your apparent self-victimization which I cannot tell for sure, but suspect, is a regular habit if it comes out to a complete stranger.

Here's the only advice I can give to advance any skill.

Here it comes:

Keep doing the skill, and if you can, keep doing the skill on the highest-level skilling device you can. For example, if you're a woodchopper, chop the highest type of tree you can gain access to, and just KEEP GOING.

There is no easy way out of skilling up things like mining and woodcutting - just keep mining and woodcutting.

Unfortunately, due to the wonderful popularity of this blog, I have chosen to severely limit who gets onto my online friends list, and I never have my private chat status set to where folks not on my friends list can see me online. It's funny, every once in a while I'll switch to 'On' instead of 'private/friends' and I'll be flooded with chats from 15 people at a time - so fast that I can't read what everyone's said before the chats get scrolled off of my screen.

So, if you have a question, please do leave me a comment on this blog. As of today's posting I have 800 outstanding comments to sift through from when I wasn't actively maintaining the blog, but new comments get first attention so post your questions and suggestions any time you'd like!

Methinks thou dost protesteth too much. Scammer. I wish I could make it so if folks put certain keywords in their comments that in addition to the verification code required, a skill-testing mathematical question would be required, in addition to 3 or 4 questions from an IQ test (which would all have to be answered correctly). If nothing else, it would waste scammer's time, which is something I like to do.

Congrats! That's a lot of chopping to get to wc59! And you're so close to being able to chop Yew, which is highly sought-after by members because bows made of Yew 'high alch' for great rates!

In a non-member world, wood is probably a lot harder to sell, simply because the 'fletching' skill is not available to the players around you.

For those who might not have read about it much, fletching is a members-only skill which allows players to whittle arrow shafts and bows from various types of logs.

My personal experience has been that regular logs sell much better than oak or willow. Maple sells better than regular logs, but their higher price is likely because there are no Maple trees on non-member worlds and thus the whole 'supply and demand' bit is imbalanced. Yew logs sell for the highest price, but also require the most dedication to be able to cut in the first place.

Note, I've been away for a bit so my prices may not be superbly accurate. They should be close, if you can find the right buyer, however:

Regular logs - 100gp per log (when selling to an arrow-maker)
Oak logs - 20gp per log
Willow logs - 30gp per log
Maple logs - 150gp per log
Yew logs - 300gp per log
Magic logs - 1000gp per log

As is standard with most things on the Player Market, transactions are done in bulk. For you, the woodchopper, that means you should be collecting at least 250 logs before advertising to other players in common meeting areas like banks, and in some cases you'd be better off to have collected 1000 logs before attempting to make a sale.

The key with making money on the player market as a 'worker' is having the patience to understand that the real buyers don't buy in 100-lot quantities of ore, wood, flax, cow hides, feathers, etc... the real buyers are players who spend serious chunks of money on raw materials so _they don't have to do the collection work themselves_ but can make use of the materials in boosting other skills or re-stocking equipment such as arrows.

Once you've found one single buyer for your stock, it's usually not that difficult to leverage the relationship to find additional buyers, or find additional "jobs" with the first buyer. Players who use the player market to buy raw materials in bulk generally buy many different raw materials from many different players, and have friends who do the same thing as well. If you serve your first client well, you should be able to get some referrals in time, to expand your "business"

Note, I really do enjoy some of the feedback I get in this blog. I've heard some great stories and received some great tips and tricks that have helped my own playing and enjoyment of the game.

But, unfortunately, my blog also attracts folks of all ages who see me as competition to be battered down into the ground ("I'm better than you, see?" comments), or some kind of financial supplier with a never-ending source of free stuff.

On the one hand, the relentless begging and bashing are strange concepts to me, considering I'm a complete and utter stranger, but on the other hand they're not strange concepts to me because I notice clearly in life how many humans mistakenly think the world revolves around them and that everyone around them is ultimately present to either serve them or stand in their way.

I used to just delete the comments, but I think I'll start to post about them instead, because it sounds more fun, and lets me link to other articles in my blog that new readers might not have otherwise come across.

I'll be nice, because that's what I am - but I also need practice being blunt, so I will likely do that too.

So, we'll start with the first one I looked at out of the 909 comments I need to sift through since I haven't been moderating comments for the past 9 months or so:

ANSWER:

I got my stats high by playing hour upon hour upon hour, wasting time I could have spent socializing with humans face-to-face, working out, cooking healthy meals, or even learning new things and expanding my various Real Life potentials. I also got my stats high by sticking with the same character and rarely playing alternate ones. For example, I have no "pure" PK-based characters at this time.

To optimize my advancement, I tended to log in early in the morning when the population counts were the lowest and work on my high-competition skills like mining during those times.

Becoming a member was a key in my advancement. The world is much much bigger and therefore things you're trying to gather in any one spot tend to have less competition than in non-member worlds.

As for cash - no, I won't give you any. You're a complete stranger, take responsibility, learn how to earn it on your own and stop relying on the world to support you.

There's lots of great tips in this blog in general, but check out the specific entries about earning money by selling logs, running runes, mining ores, and if you're a member, running flax.

Back playing RuneScape

Hey folks! I'm back! It's been around a year since I played RuneScape very often as I got into World of Warcraft pretty heavily, but life changes, and hey, I'm back on RuneScape, checkin' out all the new changes.

Since I haven't been playing for almost a year, I had allowed my Member account to move to non-member status, so I've been logging in as one of my low level 'noob' accounts to play around and get used to everything again. Just this morning, however, I cancelled my $15USD/month subscription to World of Warcraft and turned up the $5USD/month membership on my combat 85 toon, Valdesta.

Sorry folks, I'm not available to chat when on the game, but I'm starting to get back into reading the comments on this blog when submitted, so if you have topics you'd like me to write an entry on, or specific questions you would like answers to, please feel free to leave a comment.

Note, scam and spam comments won't make it into the public part of the blog, as I moderate them. Unfortunately, about 99% of the comments on this blog are drug spams or attempted password scams, so if you DO leave an on-topic comment, please give me a bit to get to it :)

Early on as a Runescape Mage or Ranger, you can fight much like you'd fight with a melee character, in being toe-to-toe with your opponent as you fire your spells or arrows into them. Low level NPC opponents don't hit very hard so this strategy works just fine initially.

But, very soon you're going to want to upgrade your strategy for fighting as a Mage or Ranger in the online role playing game, Runescape - soon, your opponents will start to beat you rather hard, because you don't have the armor that a melee fighter does.

So, what are the Runescape tips to avoid being beaten upon by our opponents as we get higher level?

Hide behind stuff, just like my secondary character (a little mismatched in dress) is doing with this lvl 10 Dwarf in the Dwarf Mines.

Find monsters with good drops and good experience who offer you things to hide behind as you attack them.

If you're a member, scout out your slayer assignment and decide whether Ranger or Mage would work better in this situation or whether you should stick to playing bash-em with your metal armor.

If you're fighting something that casts magical spells at you, then play Ranger rather than Mage or Fighter. Leathers and dragonhides are more fire-resistant than either of the other two's armor types.

In closing, I'd like to add that halberds can also be used like a Fighter's "from a distance"/range weapon, allowing you to wear your highly protective armor while still attacking from afar, hiding behind or beside something your NPC opponent cannot get past. Blue Dragons and Hellhounds are two that come to mind immediately, although these are both member beasts I believe.

Runescape Mage training tips, alchemist playground

Drawrof visits again and saves my butt since I haven't been writing properly myself lately!! I promise I'll get some entries in that I've written, soon!!

In the mean time, here's some info on the Alchemist Playground from Drawrof :)

"I spent some time in the Mage Training minigame. In particular I went to the Alchemist Playground. I took a fire staff and 100 natures. What I thought would be a short trip ended up lasting a long time. Here was my stategy.

1 - Casting High Alchemy gains 65 experience.
2 - Waiting for "Green Arrow" allows for all of that indicated item to be converted for free.
3 - I would accumulate 8 of a particular item, those that had not been given the green arrow lately.
4 - Every now and then I would convert 30 without the arrow.
5 - the items are sorted in the cupboards in clockwise order, according to the list (Boots, Kite, Helm, Emerald, Long) So if you are looking for a long and you find a helm, more 2 cupboards to the right and you will find the long.
6 - do not save coins for big deposit. Your computer may crash and you will lose all the coins. Therefore it is best to continue to deposit.
7 - although Im level 69 mage, this method is best for a level 21 member mage. The money that you collect for low alch compare to high alch is the same. Therefore the magic bonus of 2 times the money deposited is the same.

Result.

With only 100 Natures I was able to deposit over 10,000 gp. Averaging about 10 gp per cast, or 1000 high alchs.

total Experience:
1000 High Alchs- 65,000
10,000 gp X 2 - 20,000 bonus
total 85,000

Yes you do not get the gps of high alching mith armor. However, most mages high alch at a loss. This method takes discipline and some time. However, you can cast an infinate number of alch spells with only 1 nature rune and 5 fire runes in your inventory.

This makes mage advancement abosolutely free after level 21 for all members. If you were to do the same for low alch at level 21, you could be level 45 in one after noon. try it out. "

Runescape Mining Tips for low levels and non-members

Drawrof has got some more great advice, this time aimed towards non-members and low level players:

"A couple of tips (low level and f2p)

1.) make sure you are naked (no equipment), wielding pick axe, and have an empty backpack. You should always mine a full load of 28 ores for each run. Raise attack level accordingly so you can wield highest possible pick.

2.) DO NOT MINE ORES YOU JUST LEARNED TO MINE. Although mining iron gives more experience than copper or tin, the competition for this product is much greater. Iron can be used for steel and iron products. So before you leap to mining and smithing iron, keep with the copper and tin for a while. Firstly, you will most likely have higher mining skills than other cu and sn miners, so in highly competitive areas you will get the ore more often than not. Secondly, you will fill your back pack much quicker. Even though you get less experience per copper or tin or than iron, you will get more experience because you will mine more.

ie. spend 20 minutes competing with other iron miners in SW Varrock, attempting to fill backback gets you 28 iron ore(980 mining experience) and avg. 14 iron bars (525 smelting/smith experience)

or spend 20 minutes mining 2 loads of copper and 2 loads of tin in SW Varrock, you get 56 copper and 56 tin ores (1960 mining experience) and 56 bronze bars(1047 smelting/smithing experience)

I am assuming that you will have less competition and will acquire more ores, because you can mine them faster. The numbers are theoretical and no actual numbers, and are used to illustrate a point.

3.) If you are mining lessor ores then do not be afraid of busy worlds. The more players in the world the faster the ores will respawn. If you can mine copper and tin in World 1, chances are that all the rocks will be vacant. "

Fast Runecrafting of Mind Runes in RuneScape MMORPG, comments and questions

Qopitar has some feedback and some questions. I'm not much of a runecrafter myself (boring, too much running back and forth) so anyone who has good answers, feel free to post a comment!

Moving further west, I don't think one would want to run south and end up in the Black Knight's fortress, this would be bad, right? "

Yep, I think people in Non-Member worlds are looking for unaware people to wander by the Black Knight's fortress so they can PK 'em!

Members high-level Runescape Mining Tips

"Mid to High Level, member advice.
Please note that I am a level 90 jack of all trades.

I have the following stats:
73 attack (can wield rune pick axe)
72 mining (can mine adamite)
62 smithing (can smith mith kite or mith claws plus draven stout)
57 crafting(can craft Diamond Necklace but never do, i make rings of life)
67 Magic(High Alch and Enchant Diamond or Dragonstone with magic pot)

Here are some Tips
1.) Follow the yellow brick road. Having completed the Family Crest and the between the rock and... quests, one has access to very quick smithing experience. Choose the Gold Gauntlets from the brother in the scorp mine and you now gain 56.2 smithing experience for each gold bar smelted. This is a little less than the combined smelt/smith experience for a mith bar. However, one load (28) gold bars gives 1574 smithing experience, while one load of mith(5 mith and 20 coal) gives 400 smithing experience, admittingly it take less time to smelt. Futhermore the gold mine in the between a rock has tons of gold and takes no time to fill backpack.

2.) Superheat Swamp Mith Sorties.
Wield a fire staff and ring of dueling, carry in back pack rune pick, 24 nature runes and Lumbridge Tele runes. Tele to Lumbridge, take short cut through fence, and run to lumbridge swamp mine. Normally this mine is pretty empty. Now mine the 5 mith rocks, and then the coal while waiting for respawn. When you have 4, 8 or 12 coals, use superheat to make a mith bar. Continue to do so until you have 24 bars. It will get tight at the end so you may have to drop one or two bars for a bit to allow for 4 space for coal. Once all mith is full, fill two more spots with addy, mith or coal, then unwield ring and tele to CW. Note if you are wearing the Ammy of Glory make sure you bring a chisel. You get experience for cutting gems, and you may as well if you are going to drop the gems. Just drop your chisel when things get full.

3) Maximize your High Alchemy.
When you are smithing an item, make sure that it make the most bang for your buck. Smithing experience depends on bars smithed rather than items created. 1 bar items increase in value, then you can create 2 bar items, however it sometimes makes more sense to continue to make 1 bar items because they make more money. Note that I dont put a value on the cost of a nature runes for I counteract this with the magic experience I gain from casting the High Alch spell. It is a personal choice. I also runecraft my own natures.

So for example. at level 55 smithing you can smith a 1 bar mith Sword or a 2 bar mith Scimitar. When you high alch you get 507 gp per sword or 1014 gp for 2 bars. However, the scimitar only gives 624 gp. This is a 390 gp deficit. Which if you allot a 300 gp value to the nature, it pays for itself and give bonus magic exp. So look to smith items that give max. high alch values for there bars. Certainly avoid the "first" step ups in bar categories.

eg. Mithril bar level maximums.
1 bar - Swords (507 gp per bar)
2 bars - Sq. Shield (468 per bar)
3 bars - 2-H Sword, Skirt or Legs (520 gp per bar)
5 bars - Always more value in a category, Platebody (622 per bar)

AVOID
2 Bars - Scimitars and longs
3 bars - Warhammers and Battles Axes"

RuneScape Player Market not player-friendly

Now, don't get me wrong - the Player Market is where all of my major cash has come from, so I know the Player Market WORKS for getting some kind of value for your goods, but I'm just saying that it's not a system that is all that friendly to players... especially new ones, or ones with slower connections or computers.

Over the Christmas break, I gained access to a 10-day trial membership for World of Warcraft, and as I've advanced and explored, I've gotten a chance to see their solution to, and support of, the Player Market.

You see, the Player Market isn't anything that was really planned into most Role Playing Games... it evolved partially because of the introduction of unique game items for which the in-game shops didn't properly reflect value. Party Hats, for example, sell for a mere pittance at the shop but we all know they go for millions when sold directly to another player.

Unfortunately, it looks like RuneScape has chosen the "unique items are now untradable" route instead of realizing the inflated values of unique items is a symptom - not the problem itself.

In WoW, the Player Market is recognized as an integral piece of the game and it's been given programmer time. There are Auction Houses in the capital cities where players can buy and sell from other players.

There's no mass hysteria in the banks with 20-50 people using Autotypers like AutoHotKey (which are illegal to use of course, but who wants to type "Selling 1k mith arrows for 50k" over and over and over in a busy bank?) .

There are expensive items, but because multiple players may be selling the same item, there's no word of things that sell for stupid amounts of money.

Plus, the Auction Houses are useful for regular every day players. They're not intimidating, either - you bring your items to the auctioneer, he sets the minimum bid price and you set the buy out price (to end the auction early and get the items right now) and then you go on about your business which even includes logging out, because the mail system on World of Warcraft enables the sending of money and items.

Of course, the mail system likely wouldn't work as well on RuneScape if directly applied, because of the very big difference of how WoW has chosen to handle player-to-server load compared to RuneScape.

But it really does fit together well, and makes for a more pleasurable experience for those who don't want to stand in a bank and watch the scrolling text to catch someone trying to trade them for the items they have for sale.

I wonder if RuneScape is planning to spend some programmer time figuring out how to make that whole process easier and more relevant for everyone? That's the only time I've ever wanted to have an AutoTyper (which is against RuneScape rules to use)...

Members get a lot of benefits that Non-Members can only drool and dream about. Some of these things make it easier for Members to do things than it is for Non-Members. Here's one of those tips, from regular reader and commenter, Drawrof1 :)

Drawrof1 says:

"Member Runecrafting experience is gain fastest by the Fire Rune/Dueling ring circuit.

1.) From any bank with dueling ring in backpack and wearing Fire Tiara, withdraw 27 ess. (also fill all abyss pouches)

2.) Rub dueling ring and tele to Al Kharid.

3.) Run north to Fire Altar, create fire runes.

4.) Rub dueling ring and tele to castle war.

5.) Deposit runes in bank

6.) Repeat 1 to 5

I find this technique is great for raising runecrafting levels for high level crafter/mages who have access to the Shilo gem rocks. I never have a shortage of emeralds or dueling rings in the bank. The creation of the rings give experience in mining(both gems and gold), smelting(gold), crafting(cutting gem and ring), and magic(Enchant Jewelery level 2)."

Regular reader and commenter Drawrof / Drawrof1 has a few things to add about my initial Basic Runecrafting Guide post. Check it out!

"Firstly, you must decided if you are in the rune crafting business for making money or facilitating your mage advancement.

If it is about money, stick to mining ess. You can get 20 to 30 gp per ess, with the higher end associated with 1K plus inventories. (Rune Crafters dont want to waste their time with small orders) Making money in the F2P worlds from rune crafting is tough at best. Firstly, the elemental rune, air, water, earth and fire are cheap. This is mostly due to the fact that staffs replace their role. However, the most common of these rune is the Air. Most spell requires an air rune. Secondly, Mind Runes are required for the "strike" spell and are good for early advancement of magic. However, the demand for this product is quickly deminished when the mage advances to the "Bolt/Chaos" and "Blast/Death" which can make a rune crafter good money. However a f2p rune crafter does not have the luxury to craft either chaos or death runes. At the end of the day, you can mine ess and sell it for 20 gp. Or you can mine ess, then run to an altar, make a rune and sell it for 20 gp. So unless you are planning on becoming a member, do not rune craft for money making, just mine ess.

Rune Crafting for Mage advancement ,on the other hand, for the f2p world is beneficial. Even if the air rune are only 20 to 40 gp that mean a 1000 airs will cost some 20,000 to 40,000 gp. This is pricey stuff to advance a level. Unlike advancement of skills such as mining, raising mage cost more than what you gain at first. Making money as a mage occurs at level 54 with High Alchemy. It take alot of spells, ie rune to reach that lofty goal.

So mine your own ess (Several K's), make your own air and mind runes (try to maximize efficiency by making airs when you can make 2x's then switch when mind are 2x's etc), and buy a fire staff. Then get busy killing stuff that drops runes, (dark wizards south of Varrock are a nice start)

Since we're all gamers and have all probably thought about how cool it would be to make gaming more of a "lifestyle" and "career choice" than a hobby, I thought I'd share this site, which talks a wee bit about some of the video game schooling options available for those of us who like to take our degree programs online.

Basic RuneScape Runecrafting Guide, Part II

Finding Rune Altars

If you have the Talismen, you can right-click on them to get a general hint as to what direction that rune's altar is from where you are. If you were patient you could find all of the altars this way, by right-clicking, choosing "locate" and moving according to its instructions.

Or, you could refer to this list and get more detailed information about where to go, using the talismen only as a "last few metres" way to find the altar if you're just not seeing it but you know you're in the right area. Here's the list:

Air temple - Southwest of Falador's south gate.
Mind temple - Northwest side of Ice mountain, near the edge of the wilderness (but inside safe territory).
Water temple - West of the mines that are south of Lumbridge, in Lumbridge Swamp.
Earth temple - Northeast of Varrock, west of the gates leading to Canifis.
Fire temple - West of the dueling arena in Northeast Al-Kharid
Body temple - who cares, does anyone use them?

Creating Runes

Air Runes

When you first start out, the only rune type you can create is Air Rune, so we'll start with that one.

Air runes are the basis of many spells (attack, teleport, enchant), and therefore are a great rune to spend your time and experience "running" for a while, if only for your own needs.

The best route is to start at Falador East bank. Follow the path south and out of the southern Falador gates. Go southwest after you exit the gates. You should easily find the Rune Altar entrance.

Mind Runes

Mind runes are used for low level attack spells. To make them, you need level 2 runecrafting.

There are two routes you can take to get to the Mind Rune Altar - a super-safe route and a slightly-dangerous one. Of course, the slightly-dangerous one is considered the faster of the two routes, so I'll start with it:

Start in Edgeville bank. Go northwest into the wild and go around Ice mountain. Walk out of the wilderness and the mind rune altar entrance isn't far.

The second option is to start from Falador West Bank, head north, then take the eastern branch once you're outside of the city. Progress over [FILL IN HERE]. This route doesn't involve you entering the Wilderness at any time.

Water Runes

Water runes are another basic rune, used for curse and binding spells. To make water runes, you must have level 5 runecrafting.

The fastest route for non-members is to start at Draynor Bank. Follow the path east, and then south, following the water until it branches south. Continue going into Lumbridge swamp and continue east. The ruins are southwest of the entrance building to Zanaris/Lost City. Members who have completed the Lost City quest can use the bank there and will find it faster than returning to Draynor.

Earth Runes

Earth runes are also commonly used in curse spells and binding spells. To make earth runes, you must have level 9 Runecrafting.

The fastest Route is to start at Varrock's East bank. Follow the path out of the city, east. Follow the path north until you find a dead end. Go east, the rune altar entrance is in the middle of several trees. They are northwest of the Gate and path leading to Canifis.

Fire Runes

Fire runes, like air runes, are also a very commonly-used rune. To make fire runes, you must have level 14 Runecrafting.

There are two fast routes for making fire runes, I will start with the non-member information as most readers have requested it that way:

Start at Al-Kharid bank and go north of the Gem stall. From there, go northeast, following the fence for the dueling arena northward, past the path leading into the arena. You should be able to find the rune altar entrance easily.

Conclusion

While there are more routes to speak of and runes to create, I'm mainly keeping my information targetted towards non-members. Sometimes I have entries that write about why I enjoy being a Runescape Member, those are meant to entice you non-members to register ;)

Basic RuneScape Runecrafting Guide

Runecrafting is a skill I personally consider "boring", but that's because I'm impatient and don't like running back and forth and back and forth and back and forth. However, the skill is also VERY VALUABLE especially for free world players, giving you a source of your own runes as well as a source of income if you choose to sell the raw rune essence to other players.

Rune mysteries quest

To begin RuneCrafting, you must complete the Rune Mysteries quest. The reward for completing this quest is the ability to teleport to the essence mines in order to mine rune essence.

Rune Essence is "blank runes" - the raw material you will use later use to make different types of runes. You mine it with a regular mining pick and get mining experience for collecting it. Rune Essence, however, do not "stack" in your inventory like the final runes do.

Collecting Raw Rune Essence

Once you have completed the Rune Mysteries quest, you can enter the rune essence mine from any rune shop by speaking to the magic shop owner and asking for a teleport. The fastest way to the mines is from Varrock east bank, going southwards from the east side of the bank to the Rune shop where you find Aubury, who can conduct the teleports.

As with many of the NPCs that perform functions, you can right-click on Aubury and select the teleport there, instead of going through the entire conversation with him.

It's a good idea to collect several hundred or even a thousand or more Rune Essence before moving on to the next stage of actually creating the runes. Rune Essence can be sold if you end up having too much, but having too little and having to go back just as you're a few XP away from the next RC level is frustrating.

Talismen and Tiaras(air, earth, mind, fire, etc)

Before you can make runes, however, you need to be able to gain access to the Rune Altar. You may find the entrypoint within RuneScape with no problem but without the right Talisman or Tiara, you can't get in to get to the actual altar.

Here's a list of known monsters that drop talismen of various types:

Air: Wizards, Goblins
Mind: Dark Wizards, Imps, Wizards
Water: Dark Wizards, Wizards
Earth: Men, Women, Wizards, Rogues, Lesser Demons, Greater Demons, Al Kharid Warriors
Fire: Skeletons, Dark Wizards, Wizards
Body: who cares, they're useless, nobody buys them.

The Talismen are a base component part of the Tiaras as well. You can create non-magical Tiaras from silver bars it's true, but Tiaras aren't really useful in runecrafting until you've combined your talisman with the tiara, to create an "Air Tiara" or "Earth Tiara" or "Nature Tiara". Tiaras were created to allow players to wear their "key" for gaining access to the various rune altars around RuneScape. By wearing the tiara, players can enter rune altars with a regular left-click instead of a 'use-click' combonation like with the Talismen on their own. Also, since they're wearing their Tiara instead of holding it like the Talisman, there's an extra space in player inventories for more Rune Essence.

And with 28 spots in our backpacks, every spot counts!!

If you haven't started RuneCrafting at all and want to get into it, the information I've provided above will keep you busy for a little while, and that'll give me a chance to write up Part II on this theme.

I can rarely stay up until Midnight anyway (with my regular 4-5:30 AM wakeup time), so maybe I'll rent a good movie and watch it with my best friend.

Maybe I'll spend it on RuneScape! Who knows!

What Runescape Christmas Hat are you?

The Christmas update came out yesterday and wow, the elves workshops were busy busy busy with people putting together marionettes and painting baubles for decoration of the Christmas tree in Varrock.

I got my four hats last night and my four scarves today, they're neat!

I found that the alternative way of getting tree decorations (for the scarves) of robbing the imps to get baubles back from them ended up with me having too much junk and doing too much running around and competing with other players ... so I went back to where I had done the marionette work and did the bauble work there instead.

If you haven't checked out the new Christmas Update for 2005, you can go to Draynor Village and talk to Diango, the guy who sells toy horsies and spinning plates. He'll give you all the info you need. Plus, as in standard Runescape style, you really can't do the "wrong" thing when assembling the marionettes, etc - it won't let you, so if you're worried about not being able to figure it out on your own, just go in there and give it a try, I'm confident you'll have no problem.

Of course, there are NO SANTA HATS in this release - that was a release from years ago and they're not going to re-release them, I don't think.

And of course again, the hats and marionette and scarves are NOT tradeable. :( But it's fun just the same.

Runescape 2 combat calculator and more

I just wanted to post that I use SwiftSwitch to access Runescape. I've been using it for over 6 months now.

I haven't had any problems with the software, haven't had any whiff of my Runescape acccount being "hacked" (although I still take precautions with my machine).

I really like SwiftSwitch because it's got a bunch of things wrapped around the Runescape window itself - like, the complete list of all the worlds and easy access to whatever world I want to log into next (useful for trading)... and of course, as with the title of this entry, a link to a Runescape 2 combat calculator that accesses the Runescape top player list (no password required - scammers/hackers make programs that need your password) to get your experience as of your last logout, and tell you all sorts of things you'd find useful:

How much exp required to get to the next level
How many of specific types of monsters would it take to get to that level (not all monsters are listed)
Your combat level, to a decimal place so you know how close to 86 you are when Runescape is showing 85.

Things like that.

I also like the software because I can quickly look someone up on the top scores list and see whether they're competition for rocks when I'm mining mith and addy.

It's also good for when folks are blathering on about their superior levels in something. A quick lookup without having to leave the Runescape window is great.

There's also a chat client tied into the software but that pops up in a different window. At any rate, it's still decent, I would imagine it's a great way for clans to keep in touch through the day - open a channel and have everyone come and go as they please.

So, if you're looking for a slightly better Runescape client than what is on the Runescape.com website itself, I recommend SwiftSwitch.

Anonymous Feedback about Runescape PK at newbie levels

Excellent, I got a few responses from folks who seem to be more experienced in PK than I am. One comment about how Range can own Melee at the Range 70+ w/ Rune Arrows level but since this blog is aimed towards newbie non-members, I'll just leave that comment alone for now, for the advance readers to ponder on.

An anonymous player left this message, which I've cleaned up a bit for grammar and punctuation:

"Rangers and Mages are the best PKers. IF YOU ARE GONNA PK DONT DO MELEE. YOU WILL GET OWNED. Once you get to high lvls melee is ok but from 3-50 rangers and mages own the wild.

And your advice about advancing prayer I think is wrong if you want to be a succesful pker. Prayer raises your combat lvl and if you are fighting mages and rangers who hit a lot on you, you dont have the time to turn on prayer. By the time you do that you're dead because you couldnt eat. Take my word for it PRAYER IS HORRIBLE FOR PKERS.

Also if you get to wild and someone is higher lvl that could attack you ask "team?" if they say yes dont let them take you farther in wild cause they just wanna kill you, and if they say "No" run for your life."

Personally, I don't completely agree that melee is bad in PK at low levels - there are still weak Rangers coming back from deeper in the wilderness that you can catch unawares - I almost killed one myself, he was a lvl 30 ranger hanging out with a lvl 52, and the higher player couldn't attack me and all the ranger could do was run from lvl 11 wilderness to lvl 1 wilderness where I could no longer attack him due to level differential. If he didn't have enough run to have run all the way I would have killed him.

I do agree that prayer at low levels is useless because you have to get to high prayer levels to be able to use good prayer spells in combat that block things like range or mage or melee attacks, and raising your prayer DOES raise your combat level, which doesn't help at low levels either.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend teaming with complete strangers if you're a newbie PKer, because it's just another thing to have to worry about. Find some players you chat with for a couple of weeks first and get to know a little, and put your trust in them. It's not a guarantee but you'll end up dead at the hand of your "teammate" much less often.

Of course, if you can get into a CLAN, that would be the ultimate because then you have clanmates you can trust even more fully not to turn on you in combat, because they don't want to be tossed from the clan either.

"The Iron Chain body would result in a much greater return than iron plate. Firstly, the best shop to sell the plate is located near both a bank and an anvil in the heart of Varrock. Therefore, unless you lucked out at some odd time, say 3 am in morn, you never really acheive a high price for you plate.

I found the best smithed product for me was the Chain body. The shop in the south part of Falador, is off the beaten path. And would often have few items in stock. I would smith dozens of iron chain, note them, then world hop to acheive the best prices. I did this in the F2P environment.

Great advice - shops off the beaten path are always the best to sell at if you're looking for good returns for your sales, and the tip about having your items in noted format and then world-hopping is right up my alley... notes are light and there are lots of worlds to sell my wares to so I never have to sell to a shop where there are already more than 10 of what I'm selling.

Question about raising Runescape crafting with clay

Recently I posted some advice that Gyro had given about strategies for raising mining and crafting skills together and reader Qopitar left a good question:

Personally, I try to do all of my skills in 'batches', depending on where it's most efficient to do specific skills. Therefore, I'd recommend:

mine 100-200 clay first
move on to Falador where the water fountain is very close to the bank, do your mixing there
then move on to Edgeville bank and run back and forth from the pottery wheel and oven which is in the south part of Barbarian Village

I find in general it's much more efficient to do things in "bulk" stages like this, so that's what I personally recommend!

Exploring and finding goodies in the Runescape Wilderness

Back here I wrote an entry about the Wilderness as well, and talked about some of the things I like to get from there with my Primary character.

My secondary character is a different story, however, since she's a lot smaller than my primary, and doesn't have access to the same skills or equipment Valdesta uses when she comes out here.

After re-stocking my healing and making sure I was entering the Wilderness at a 1-on-1 combat area, I headed north. I ran across a few people along the way but again, I'm such a low level right now that nobody could attack me.

I keep a good eye on my long distance viewer, and am attracted to areas where there are things laying on the ground. It could be things that respawn on that spot or it could be a player is killing the monsters in that area and leaving the bones on the ground - either way, it's something worth checking out.

I found the brown bears at around lvl 12 wildy, because they have 10-15 bronze arrow spots that respawn around them. Range is an expensive thing to advance so I figured I'd hang around there for a while and collect bronze arrows, and see if any other players wandered by in the mean time.

Most who wandered by were too high level to engage in battle with me, and most didn't even say a word as they wandered off. Right before I decided to take off, a player some 15 lvls above me who was skulled and wearing worse armor than I was first tried to attack me, then seeing that wasn't possible, he asked me to "team", and wanted to take me to fight the Hill Giants together.

Hah, um, no thanks. I know that the Hill Giants area is multi-combat and likely deep enough in the Wilderness that my new "friend" would turn on me and walk away with some of my nice shiny mithril armor. I said "no thanks, just collecting arrows" and then logged out when they kept hasselling me about it.

Now, I'll switch worlds and go back to collecting arrows so I can get some more range experience for free. I find it's a good exercise in becoming comfortable with fighting in the Wild, although some of the comfort is that I'm low enough level to be protected from most attackers. But whatever - for us PK newbies, comfort in the Wilderness, however it's attained, is important to work on. You'll do no good in PK if you freak out because you're wound too tight ;)

Runescape newbie PKing experiences and thoughts, Melee vs Rangers

So I took my secondary character, armed with lobsters, out into the Runescape Wilderness to see how she would fare, being only combat lvl 28 and experienced with Melee.

There are a lot of mages and rangers out there, and a lot of folks who are wearing mismatched armor sets which cross melee, mage and ranger. Most people are much higher level than I am at 28, which is good in terms of exploring alone. It took me a while to run into a ranger around my combat level who wasn't in a team of 2-3 others.

I tried to stay in the 1-on-1 combat areas, but by the time I found this ranger, and his same-level ranger buddy, I had wandered into a multi-combat zone. As soon as I noticed this, I ran back to the 1-on-1 zone, with the rangers following me.

Once I was inside the 1-on-1 zone, I turned back and continued fighting with the ranger who had followed the closest.

I noticed that I didn't have a skull over my head - I guess that ranger attacked me first because they had the skull... and all of my 'attacks' were seemingly seen as defensive. This is good, I want to be fighting with a player who has a skull, but not have a skull of my own. I want them to drop stuff if they die, but if I die, I want to keep as much of my stuff as possible.

I've actually read that as something that's advised to newbie PKers - not only the advice about attacking a ranger if you're melee or a melee if you're a mage, but the advice about only attacking players who *already* have a skull over their heads. I would imagine if you made the first hit you'd also get skulled, but you want to be attacking opponents who have a higher chance at dropping everything they have if you defeat them.

Anyhow, back to the battle... There were two rangers, but I pulled them outside the multi-combat zone so I could take them on seperately. The second ranger hung around closely while the battle with the first ranger went on and on. We both had a full inventory of food, apparently.

The ranger I was fighting didn't want me to take his arrows, so every 20 seconds or so he'd advance to where I was standing in order to pick up the arrows. This had the effect of pushing my character to another spot - and eventually I inched my way back into the multi-combat zone and the second ranger joined in again. I ran deeper into the 1-on-1 zone so I couldn't be inched in once again. The rangers followed.

The main ranger attacking me continued his practice of picking up arrows, while the second ranger watched. Then, after a few minutes, the second ranger realized our battle was stopped for a brief moment each time the main ranger picked up arrows, so the second ranger attacked during that moment. It was then that I decided I should pull out because my food was mostly gone, I have no law runes for teleports, and I was at lvl 10 Wilderness fighting with people quite close to my own level.

I bugged out, and headed back to Edgeville to re-stock before making another journey out to explore up to lvl 10 wilderness in the 1-on-1 areas to see where would be a good place to stalk other players.

Taking a break from mining and smithing, Stab at Runescape PK

Well, both my primary and my secondary character have been doing a lot of mining and smithing recently and I'm in need of a break from it for a while.

One topic I haven't ever given Runescape tips on is the PK topic, largely because I'm not very experienced at it myself. I was hoping I'd find some good PK blogs around but I really haven't found anyone who writes useful pk-related articles, updates regularly and writes in a style that is easy to read. Good writers are hard to find, and I guess good PK'ers probably don't want to share their secrets.

So, hey, I figured I'd write about my PK revelations, as a fellow "Runescape Newbie to PKing". Some of my readers are much more experienced with PK, I understand, and for this reason I hope there will be lively feedback on this topic from people of all levels of experience.

My focus for PK entries in this blog is going to be done with characters that are not financially supported by a wealthier character on Runescape - my secondary character has had the benefit of my knowledge to advance her faster than my primary character did, but no financial benefits. I'm trying to be in the shoes of the true newbie to Runescape, as that is who this site primarily aims to educate.

Basics of the Wilderness on Runescape

The Wilderness is the primary area of PKing on Runescape, and it's located to the north of the northerly Free-to-Play cities. For Members, there is also an "underground Wilderness" area which is a PVP (player vs player) zone.

While in the Wilderness, the marker illustrated to the left will be on the bottom right hand corner of your play window (above the chat window). The level indicator tells you what range of levels can attack you - level 1 means people from one level above to people one level below your combat level will be able to attack you where you stand. The deeper you get, the lower the level of player you can attack, but the higher the level of player who can attack you.

The crossed-swords indicator in the same graphic above tells you that you're in a MULTI-COMBAT area. This is very important for the new player killer - if you're out there alone with no friends to back you up, stay out of the multi-combat areas, because that's where you can be attacked by multiple people at the same time. While you're getting used to PKing, it's probably best to stick to one-on-one battles.

The level and the crossed-swords indicators will change as you move throughout the Wilderness. Pay close attention to them.

Teleport runes and objects can be used in the low levels of the Wilderness, but once you've progressed past level 20 in the Wilderness, your teleports no longer work. If you want to merely explore north of level 20 Wildy, go without anything in your inventory and without any armors or weapons until you're more confident in your escaping skills.

Basics of PK

It goes like this: Melee owns Rangers, Rangers own Mages, Mages own Melee.

Therefore, pick your foes wisely, and if you have the means, perhaps bring two sets of armor so you can switch if you meet with the foe your current type is weak against.

You can still be owned quite easily by a low-combat-level player who is actually a "pure" character - that is, a character set up and well-funded by an experienced player whose sole purpose is to dominate PK with this character.

Walk when you can, so you have lots of run when you need it.

If you're alone, be very careful approaching groups in the Wild. They're likely friends and even if there's a battle going on, you're likely to get a lot of attack attention if you join in.

Find areas where players come to collect raw materials or come to kill specific monsters that aren't available outside of the Wilderness. Attack those who are alone or may not be paying attention.

Advance your Prayer so you can use it as extra protection in case you run across a mage who prevents your movement and blocks your teleport ability for a short while.

Don't bring anything into the Wilderness that you're not willing to lose.

I'm going to head my secondary character into the Wilderness now and see what kind of adventures she comes up with, and what additional advice. Please feel free to post if you have advice of your own, such as great places to hang out to catch people unaware.

Secret cooking pot in Chicken Farm: Drawof's Runescape tip

I love this kind of feedback, I'm learning new things about unmarked places in Runescape all the time from folks who leave comments! This one is a continuation of Part One and Part Two of the "secret cooking pots are found here!" entries, and another Runescape tip from Drawof:

"For newbies on the free2play servers, the best unmarked stove is located within the chicken farm northeast (across river next to cow field) of Lumbridge.

Immediately after leaving Tutorial Island and dumping all equipment in bank, go to this farm, kill chickens, collect feathers, bury bones, and when your backpack is filled with raw chicken, go to farm and right click on stove (located on west wall of east room in farm) and cook all chicken. Eat Chicken to help heal you so you can kill more chicken.

Good start to get attack/strength/defense to level 10, and raising cooking to decent level to begin fishing career if you so choose. (Why, with all the feathers you will be able to catch tons of trout and salmon or sell them at the shop for 3 to 4 gp each, good starting cash for newbie)"

Runescape Dwarf Cannons and the economy

Although you have to be a member to actually use the Dwarf Cannon, non-members can definitely benefit from the Dwarf Cannon just the same, without having ever seen one in action.

How?

Well, Dwarf Cannons need ammunition, and plenty of it.

And as a bonus, the people who OWN Dwarf Cannons spent 600k or more on their cannon in the first place, so you know they have cash to be buying the ammunition the cannon needs. Cannons are not for poor players.

So, what can you do to supply towards this ammunition need?

Make steel bars.

And hey, that ties right in with the fact that we need to get our characters up to lvl 40 mining in order to mine gold to further crafting levels and increase our wealth.

Although I personally do not buy steel bars (haven't done the Dwarf Cannon quest yet), members are willing to pay 600 coins per steel bar in order to turn them into Cannonballs.

But of course, you're a non-member, so how do you find a member who is looking to buy steel bars?

Make a whole bunch of them (over 100) and then head over to http://www.tip.it/runescape and visit the discussion forums there, and post what you've got for sale. Make sure to include your player name, and if you post intelligently (ie: so others can actually read and understand it) and name your price in your post (60k for 100 bars) you should have a few people respond to your post or contact you in the game to make the trade.

Once you've found a player who has Cannonball needs, keep a hold of their name for repeat sales as you make more bars.

There is a HUGE need for steel bars because of the Dwarf Cannons. Going ahead and making 100 before finding a buyer is the best choice, as first looking for someone to buy from you, THEN making the bars is very time-consuming and your buyer may not need to buy by the time you have made your bars.

So, that's what my secondary character is going to do (now that she's smelting 30), until she's mining 40!

Main Character stats as of Nov 24, 2005

I find that people who read here are interested in knowing my "credentials" on the game, so I re-post my stats every couple of weeks so y'all can keep up with what's going on in my skilling life.

Here are my main character's stats as of November 26, 2005.

The main thing I'm working on right now is Mining and Smithing, working to get to lvl 75 Smithing so I can make Addy arrow tips for my ranging needs. Yum!

I pretty much don't use farming anymore except to grow herbs and potion secondary-components like Limpwurt roots. I don't like Runecraft so it sits, low and stagnating as well.

Runescape Smithing: What should you make?

With the recent Iron mining and ore collecting, and the ore smelting that I stopped doing at 250 iron bars, I had achieved level 24 smithing, so I headed off to Varrock to do anvil smithing of the iron bars, turning them into sellable weapons and armor while advancing my smithing further - hopefully to 30, at which point I can begin smithing steel bars.

The iron bars turned out to be enough to get my smithing up that far, but after running around through Varrock, Barbarian Village, Falador, Port Sarim and Al Kharid to sell what I had smithed, and seeing the feedback on the most recent poll about what skills I should write more about here, I thought that perhaps a more advanced discussion about the smithing process would be beneficial, even though the basics have been introduced already, back here.

The advanced tactics mentioned in the second Blast Furnace entry aimed towards members using mithril or addy can be used anywhere with bronze, iron and steel metals where an Anvil room is in close proximity to a specialty shop (Platebody shop, Platelegs shop, Axe shop, Sword shop, etc). For example:

East of central Varrock is an Anvil that shares space with a Platebody shop.
South of Port Sarim at the tip of the land mass is an Anvil, relatively close to Port Sarim's Axe shop.
West Varrock anvil is a short trip from Barbarian Village helmet shop.

Something I noticed while I was doing my own sell run was that Iron kite shields are generally difficult to sell to specialty shops without those shops already having 15 or 20 or more in stock. Iron square shields, however, were generally much less represented, and therefore my iron squares sold for more than my iron kites. Iron kites are dropped by Hill Giants in the Edgeville dungeon, so even if people aren't actively smithing much that day, there'll be a lot more iron kites in circulation.

I haven't yet noticed this pattern with other smith-and-sellable objects but I'll post a second part to this topic if information comes up about it!

Turn 50-100k into 250-500k in Runescape

Gyro's Runescape tips, Mining/Crafting/Smithing

Gyro left a great comment with some useful information on my entry with non-member strategies for building mining and smithing skills. Part One of Gyro's suggestions can be found here, and Part Two follows below! Thanks Gyro!

"Strategy Two (Crafting/Gold/Silver Mining)

Another great way to level your mining, is to get your crafting up to level 40. I suggest mining clay and making bowls to level up the fastest, and always bank and cut any found gems. (mine clay in sw Varrock mine and bank in west bank) then add h2o, then run to barb village to edgeville repeat) Always mine 10 to 20 full back pack loads at a time for each step.

Anyway, once you reach level 40, you can enter the Crafting guild south of Falador. When you first get in, ignore the gold ore, even if you can mine it. There is more competition for this ore, rather focus on the silver. it is faster and when turned into a tiara, provides much greater craft experience than just a simple gold amulet. This way you can level so you can craft diamond and ruby amulets.

The residual benefit is that while you are raising your craft, you get good mining experience and a small amount of smelting for the silver bars.

Once you are a high enough level, mine a bunch of gold. I find that in the right world you can hit the 6 silver, then 7 gold and back to 6 silver until you are full. Fill the bank with several hundred then smelt them.

Drawof's Runescape Crafting quick advancement strategy

More helpful suggestions were posted as a result of my recent Crafting-related posting. Note, I've adjusted the comment a bit for clarity, grammar, punctuation, etc. Just something I do:

Depending on how high your mining level is, 50 loads of clay really does not take that long. Break it up, into parts. IE do 10 loads at a time - mine, turn into clay, create pottery and fire it. It only took me a few days to get into the guild once I figured out this strategy."

Gyro's Runescape tips, Air Runes/Iron Ore in Rimmington

Gyro posted a couple of comments with great additions to my strategies for advancing your mining skills on the non-member worlds, so I thought I'd post them as main posts in case folks don't find them otherwise.

I like your Rimmington mine for F2P. Prior to becoming a member, I was able to raise my mining to 69.

I found killing two birds with one stone made this rise easier. The trek from falador to the rimmington mine passes directly past the Air Temple.

Strategy One (Air Rune/Iron Ore)

Buy/mine a lot of essence in varrock, bank several 1000.
Then travel to Falador, strip naked, wield pick, and wear the Air Tiara. Then fill backpack full with essence. Run to temple create Air runes. Then travel ssw to the Rimmington mine to fill your boots with Iron ore. Here's a good tip on looking for power miners - it is quicker for them to trade ore than dropping it. I would then run back to Falador to start the whole process again.

You level 4 different skills with this strategy. Mining, Smelt/smith, runecraft, and eventually mage (with all the air runes you create)

On Scamming, part 4

And this is Part Four, which is just an extension of some of the Scam information I've heard about and seen tried myself. This post is for EDUCATIONAL purposes, meant to help people AVOID being scammed. Please do not try to use this information to scam others, as it is against the rules and Jagex will have every right to can your account.

"Item Duplication" / Alt + F4 scam

This is a scam that has been around for a long long time. Ever since Windows 3.1 came out and folks first started getting online with text-based modem dial-up programs to get onto the Internet to play free online multiplayer role playing games (text-based back then of course). OTHER KEY COMBINATIONS MAY BE USED. Pay attention to the premise of this scam and be careful.

In short, the scam is this:

Another player tells you that you can duplicate all of your items in your inventory by dropping everything on the ground and pressing Alt+F4 on your keyboard.

Don't worry, they tell you - they can't see your items for 60 seconds after you drop them, giving you "plenty of time" to pick them back up, including the duplicates.

Only, the problem is that Alt+F4 on a Windows machine shuts down the active window. If you've never tried it before, bookmark this site and then test it out. Your browser will close, and you'll have to re-open it to continue reading this entry.

By the time you get your Runescape window back up and you get logged back in, your equipment is gone, and so is your "friend".

Rare Zamorak Wine

I've heard of a scam which involves leading uninformed players to their death and looting the corpse afterwards, and it doesn't surprise me, so I thought I'd share.

The scam works this way:

The Scammer tells you that there's a rare object that's reset right now that you can only get once in the entire time you play the game, which is why he can't get it, but why he's offering to help you find it.

Scammer has you follow him (or her) and brings you to a place where there are a bunch of Zamorak Wizards milling around, non-aggressive-like. And there's a jug of Zamorak wine just sitting there, perhaps on an altar. All you have to do is go in there and grab it, your new "friend" advises.

So, you go in and grab it, at which point all of the Wizards get mad and begin firing upon you with strong magical attacks.

Presumably, you die, and leave your corpse for your new "friend" to loot freely.

Conclusion

Those are the new scams that had not been mentioned in previous entries. Don't get caught by them!

Mining and working with iron in Runescape

As a free player, you've got a lot of competition in the mining areas. Unfortunately, mining of ores is one of those skills that only one can be successful at on one rock at a time, too. Meaning, if you're working on a rock and someone else comes along and starts clinking on the same rock, it's possible they may get the ore, not you.

And of course, if competition is especially high, you may find yourself running from rock to rock, trying to get an ore or two, and having higher level miners winning out each time.

Very frustrating!

There's not much you can do about this at a low level, other than hopping worlds when there are too many "mining jerks" around, paying attention to those players who "respect your rock" and returning the respect (don't turn someone into a mining jerk who wasn't planning to be), and mining in more remote locations that are less populated.

As a free player, I've already done a bit of mining work mentioned back here which got my mining level up to 26 and my smelting/smithing level up to 20, and gave me a nice bit of cash to get going with as well. If you haven't read that entry and especially if you're below the stats I've mentioned here, consider going back before going on with this entry.

Selecting a pickaxe

The pickaxe you can wield depends on your attack level, since the pickaxe is also considered a weapon. So, if you can wield mithril, you can use a mithril pick. If you can wield rune, you can use a rune pick. Some types of ores may require certain basic level of picks in order to mine, but in general, if the pick is a higher quality, then it mines the ores faster than a pick of lower quality on average.

However, it's really your finances that determine what pick you use if your attack level is high already. If you are able to wield a rune pick but cannot afford the 32,000 coins to buy one, then you should consider the 6400 coin addy pick or 3200 coin mithril pick and then set a specific goal to gain enough money to buy a rune pick. This type of goal-setting is highly common within Runescape, as you'll notice the more you play.

Note, right now my secondary character is using a steel pick. She could use a mith pick if she had one, but she doesn't have enough money right now, so I'm setting that as a goal, too.

Mining for experience

If you're not interested in smelting the ores nor smithing them nor selling them in bulk, and the mining experience is what you're looking for (since coal, mithril, addy and rune ores sell very well in bulk), then mine, and dump the ores on the ground so you can mine some more.

Mining for money

Keep a look out for those people who are mining for experience and dumping their ores. I generally find that with iron ore, one in four trips has me filling up on someone else's ores, while the rest of the time I mine my own loads of ore to bring back for smelting, smithing and selling.

My favorite non-members spot to mine iron right now is south of Falador, west of Port Sarim, near Rimmington. It's a bit of a run to get to and from the bank, but because of that fact, the competition is lessened for the ores. Also, Falador has a furnace, so I mine, smelt, and bank my bars, then repeat the process.

Mining or Smithing bonus objects

For non-members, about the only bonus that can be found while mining is the occasional mine of precious gems - sapphires, emeralds, rubies and diamonds. These can be used as part of your crafting skills, or sold to the player market for their crafting skills.

For members, the Ring of Forging is also available which is a useful tool - wear the ring while you're smelting iron ores, and for 140 iron ores, you won't have any fail to smelt into bars because they're "too impure"! What a great ring. Just be sure to watch for when the ring crumbles off of your finger if you've got a few of them to wear.

So for now, I'll mine, smelt, and bank my iron bars until I get to 200 iron bars or until I reach mining level 35. At that point I'll do some smithing and selling in the specialty shops so I can by that mithril pick!

Crafting and the Runescape Cowhide Collection Crew

After spending a while fighting Dwarf miners as a mage and expending the majority of the runes I had purchased for some 15k from the Port Sarim rune shop, I returned to the bank to re-assess what I should do next. What I can AFFORD to do next, after spending that bunch of money on runes.

My magic level is over 30 now which is cool, but now it's time to do something that'll earn me some cash to support further magic, ranging or fighter activities.

Since the overwhelming majority of voters in the recent poll have stated they want more non-members skill-building articles, I thought I'd take a stab at crafting.

My crafting level is at 1, so I figured I'd spend some time being a Cowhide Collector near Lumbridge, and then do some basic crafting to get myself going and into some kind of crafting that might earn me some cash if sold properly.

The first thing I learned was that while cowhides are great for getting your crafting skills advanced initially, they're certainly not good for making any kind of money on free worlds. So, unless you have a lot of cash or a lot of cowhides, this isn't the way to go. DO use up the cowhides you have, however - if you can collect 200 cowhides and process them, you will be well-set for handling gold, which is a great way to increase your cash levels.

Presuming, of course, that you can mine gold yet... have you been working on your mining levels? You'll need level 40 mining to do anything with gold.

I worked through the cowhides until I landed at crafting lvl 9, and it was at that point I checked the mining level for gold and realized I need to do some work there.

My secondary character itself is only at mining 26, so perhaps I'll end this entry here and give us all time to get our mining up to level 40, and the next entry will be about how to earn good money while also training your mining up to 40 for crafting purposes.

Greetings all!

I appreciate all the feedback I've been getting about this website, it sounds like what I'm trying to do is working, in trying to help people who are brand new to Runescape and have a lot to learn about it. Sure, you can learn this stuff on your own and some of it becomes "common sense" afterwards, but initially, especially for those new to online role playing games, nothing makes sense.

I've had some more advanced posts for the Runescape Member audience and I intend to do so, although I may eventually split this blog into two blogs - one for Members and one for Non-Members. Since one of my characters recently joined the RS Killers clan I might also fire up a PK blog. Who knows.

Anyway, I'll get on to the main point of this entry!

At the very bottom of the blog are five small graphics that bring you to five different Runescape "top 100" sites, where my site is listed. As you can see, this site is doing well in the rankings, but if you click into the stats portion of any of the sites, you can also see that there are very few reviews about the site itself.

I was hoping some of you wouldn't mind writing a quick review ON THOSE SITES about this site to give me and others who may look at the top 100 lists some feedback about whether this site is good or not, and how it could improve. There have been a lot of "this site sucks" entries, so hey if you like the site, help even out the reviews.

New Runescape clans accepting applications!

Hey! Did you know that I also blog occasionally about my main character's activities over on the Gamersinfo.net Runescape Blog?

There are currently three of us who blog on the Runescape blog over there (two teenagers and one adult, me), but the site is looking for more players who are willing to write entries about their adventures on Runescape.

Fast money in Runescape running discarded fish

This tip is for low-level players of the multi-player online role playing game, Runescape, who are looking to earn enough money to upgrade to steel or mithril equipment. If you're shopping for Rune equipment, this probably isn't a great way for you to make quick Runescape cash at the volume you require.

Log into Runescape, and go to Lumbridge on any world (members or free) and go to the house where the Goblins (level 7) respawn, near the hidden cooking pot I posted about before. There are two fishing spots there.

If there are people fishing, they will usually drop Raw Salmon and Raw Trout which you can cook (if your cooking level is high enough) and sell in the general store for 10 to 30 gp - FREE Runescape money!

You can sell the raw fish at Runescape's General Store or at the fish shop in Port Sarim for some extra coins. Raw fish is best sold in Port Sarim for the best prices, but sometimes the General Store is just more convenient.

If nobody's dropping fish, DON'T ask for free fish, just quietly check back later. After a couple of weeks you should know of a few players who fish regularly and also drop what they fish, so you know who to look for.

Once you find where you can Harpoon fish and Cage lobsters, hang around because often people are harpooning for Swordies and discarding tuna!

Starting out as a Mage in Runescape

My secondary ("newbie") character is combat lvl 25 now and I've gathered about 50 mind runes and various fire and earth and air runes while fighting goblins and other monsters, so I figure maybe it's time to advance some mage levels.

From my mining of tin and copper ores and smelting into bronze bars which were turned into various bronze armors and weapons, I had gathered a little over 10k in the bank after selling everything at their proper specialty stores around the land. I brought that with me and headed to the rune shop south of East bank in Varrock.

Since my secondary player is on a free world, I found that the rune shop was really low on mind runes - they must be in high demand. I hopped worlds a few times and found that on each world, mind runes were quite depleted. I did manage to buy 100 of them however, so I took those and figured it would be a good start.

I also bought an air staff from the staff shop in the northwest corner of Central Varrock - it cost just under 1000 coins but will save me from having to use up air runes, which are a constant piece of a lot of the low-level mage spells.

Setting Your Primary Spell To Cast

As a Mage, you are expected to be using a staff of some kind when executing your spells. Like a warrior without a weapon to smash, slice or cleave you, a Mage without a staff is nothing.

If you can get an air, water, earth or fire staff in Varrock, do that - whichever elemental staff you get, the staff makes it so you don't need those specific runes in order to cast spells which call for them. The staff takes care of, say, your 'air runes' needs when wielded.

Another key thing about the Magician's staff is that with it wielded and with adequate other runes in their inventory, players can set their "default spell" to cast and fighting will become a lot more automatic than if you were not wielding a staff. If you've been frustrated at the process of casting spells to kill an opponent, this is the key you were missing.

Got The Runes and Staff, Where To Kill?

Personally, I'm a multi-tasking player. I like to not only build my mage skill, but also gather items that can be resold at a future time for when I need some quick cash. So, I decided my first round of mage killing would take place near Lumbridge, taking on cows, and gathering up the cow hides left laying around.

By the time my inventory was full of cow hides, I had advanced to magic level 7 and was allowed to fire off water blast spells - but I didn't have any water runes on me, they were back at the bank. I headed over to Draynor to store my items in the bank, and then I figured I'd visit the other Rune Shop which is located in Port Sarim.

Port Sarim - Less-Visited Rune Shop

Port Sarim Rune Shop is quite a bit less visited than the Varrock Rune Shop, and as a result, I found there were over a thousand mind runes awaiting purchase. I bought about 250 and then headed out to spend some of them with my water and earth runes once again.

East of Draynor is a great place to practice ranged and magic attacks - there are lvl 24 Jail Guards you can attack from behind a fence, and as long as you stay behind the fence and can fire on them, you'll kill them and they won't be able to take a single swing at you. A lot of Runescape Rangers and Mages use this strategy long into the high levels, so keep it in mind.

Unfortunately, Jail Guards don't drop anything but bones, so even though I stayed there and trained up to mage lvl 15 (I can now do fire blasts), I moved on to find something that offered more than just experience and training and prayer experience from burying their bones.

Remember those lvl 9 Wizards that smoked my metal-clad body when I was first training as a warrior? Well, a fellow Mage wouldn't smoke me when I'm wearing my mage outfit, so I went over and paid them another visit.

I am pleased with their drops, so I think I'll stay here a while to train. Here are the things I'm picking up after killing the Wizards:

Earth runes (5)
Coins (1-18)
Staff
Chaos runes (2)
Wizard robe top (blue)
Wizard hat (blue)
Water runes (12)
Mind talisman

I'm sure there's more they drop that I didn't get to see. At any rate, don't go home without a full inventory from there, even if it's just a bunch of staves to sell at the general store for a few coins.

The first real "goal" I have for my secondary character in terms of Mage is getting to lvl 25 and to where she can teleport to Varrock. Teleports help shorten transportation time something wicked, and even if she can only teleport to one city for now, that's great.

But, it will have to wait for another day, because it's time to go.

Free air runes on Runescape, respawn in Karamja

Are you looking for a reliable place to pick up free air runes on the free online role playing game Runescape to get you going as a Mage?

You're in luck! There's an air rune respawn spot in Karamja, close to the docks you arrive at when you ride to Karamja from the Port Sarim docks.

In fact, right in that same area on Runescape in Karamja, you can get a job with a Non-Player Character (NPC) named Luthas, packing boxes of bananas and getting paid 30gp a box, as well!

It's behind Luthas' house that the air runes reset - 3 at a time, every 30 seconds or so. If you hang around for a half hour (or pack banana boxes in between), you'll have about 200 air runes.

Personally, I don't know why folks bother with air runes, I'd rather use an air staff - but I guess, sometimes I'd rather use a fire, earth or water staff and in those cases I'd need air runes wouldn't I?

Runescape Holiday Drops: Halloween 2005

NOTE: THIS IS OVER - If you didn't get your ZOMBIE HEAD, it's TOO LATE. And as for the Little Kids and Candies, they're gone! But Grim Reaper apparently still comes when you die...

The Halloween Update has been put into place on Runescape!

Shadies and Gentleghouls....Mwa haha ha haaa ha..... it’s halloween!! For this week only there are some spooky halloween events running....

-The Lumbridge swamps are definitely not for the faint hearted this time of year. The halloween zombies are around, and not only are they terrifying enough to unlock the new Scared emote, but you can collect your very own zombie head to talk to (if you can catch it), as a spooooky halloween souvenir.

-Dust off those old bits of costume and head over to Lumbridge where the local kids are trick or treating!! Sadly the kids aren’t too scared of adventurers since they see quite a few everyday... Perhaps the zombies in the swamps can lend you a helping hand? (or head!)

-Rumours that the Grim Reaper himself is making an appearance are completely unconfirmed, but that's probably because everyone who saw him was already dead. Just be sure that if you do decide to visit the reaper to make sure you bank your items first!

Please note - The halloween event will be removed next week. The zombie head and the horror emote will remain, but only for those lucky enough to unlock them this week! All the zombies, Lumbridge kids and sweets will vanish.

So, what does this mean?? How do you get in on getting the stuff?

Here's what you do:

Go to the swamps south of Lumbridge and interact with the zombies 3-4 times, until he takes his head off and you can pick it up. You can only have one zombie head at any time, and they are NOT TRADEABLE.

Once you have the zombie head, go into Lumbridge itself and look for the little kids running around. Interact with them, and Trick them, which will make you offer to scare them - and you'll scare them with the zombie head, freaking the kids out and causing them to drop candies!

An important thing to note is the the candies are immediately visible to everyone in the area, so you need to be quick to snatch it up. The candies are NOT TRADEABLE, but apparently they have a cute little emote when you eat them.

The third thing introduced is the Grim Reaper, but from what I've been able to figure, folks are NOT getting any items from the Reaper - the scythe that some people may have is a drop from a PREVIOUS Halloween.

Runescape Newbie Guide Opinion Poll - Member or Non-Member?

Hey all! I used to have a Bravenet poll up on the site so I could find out more about the readership and be able to post things that are more targetted towards y'all, but Bravenet caused annoying pop-ups for folks who didn't even participate in their poll, so I took it down.

I've now found another Free Poll hosting provider I'd like to try out. It DOES have a pop-up (pop-under actually) when you vote, but at least now it's not popping up every time you see a poll on the website.

I'd appreciate it if you'd vote in my polls, because it would really help target my articles towards what you like and away from what you don't like.

To start, here's a poll inquiring about the Membership status of the readership. I write mainly non-member materials on this blog and I'm wondering if I should be doing more of the Member materials or not.

Quick Runescape money running runes

When you're playing the free online role playing game Runescape, you do many things.

Sometimes you gear up and fight monsters. Sometimes you dress lightly and mine ores or chop wood or fish. Sometimes you remove your best equipment and put on your second-best set, bring a bunch of lobbies or swordies, and head out into the Wilderness to explore in the dangerous territory of Player Killer land.

But, those are all things where you're doing things mainly for yourself. I'd like to introduce a one of the main ways you can do something for yourself, while also providing a very worthwhile service to another player, and making money while doing so. One of the many Runescape tips that I use personally!

Money in Running

"Running" on Runescape and likely other online role playing games means this: As simple as possible... one player is at a specific spot on the game, doing a specific task (say, crafting fire runes), and other players (usually more than one) are running back and forth between that player and the bank.

The "runner" players are providing the stationery player with raw materials (rune essence) to do what they're doing there, and at the same time are receiving a share of the product (runes) being created.

So, in the end, for your running back and forth, you'll get a bit of free money in Runescape in the form of runes, and if you're lucky, you won't even have to "spend" any rune essence. Some traders will ask you to bring 27 rune essence to them, and in return they'll give you 27 noted rune essence and 27 runes of the type they're crafting! Then, you head back to the bank, deposit it all and withdraw the 27 essence to start the process all over!

What a great deal!

How To Be Annoying On Runescape Or Other Online Role Playing Games

No, I will not give you anything for free, and I will not loan you any money. I will, however, offer jobs to those who don't mind doing work to get the money or equipment they desire. So, YES, ASK ME ABOUT A JOB and feel free to ask me for Runescape tips, but NO, DON'T ASK FOR ANY MONEY OR OBJECTS FOR FREE.

In fact, don't even tell me how broke you are, or how poor you are. I don't want to hear about it, you're in the same boat as 80% of the Runescape population.

Long version of this post:

Free online role playing games are a lot of fun, specifically because there are SO many people to meet and talk to (or attack and kill), as well as so many things to do on the game, and so many places to go...

But they're also annoying sometimes, because with free online games come a whole bunch of people who can't afford the registered/members version of the game, and it seems that among these players there are a higher percentage of folks who display Annoying Behavior, and who seemingly don't realize it's annoying.

This entry is dedicated to the education of all individuals as to what denotes Annoying Behavior on an Online Role Playing Game.

Mainly it's this:

BEGGING.

Begging is when you ask for something for free from someone you barely know.

If you've spent a few weeks chatting and exchanging Runescape tips and getting to know someone, you might have built up enough good will in the relationship to borrow something, and that's a different story.

I'm talking about the folks who talk to me for 10 minutes or less and are then asking me "is there anything you have that you don't want that you could give to me?", "I got hacked/I died, can I have some money/equipment?" and "wow you must have a lot of money, could I borrow 50k?" or the likes. I've even been asked by people if I'd pay REAL money for them to become members!!!

You think there's no big deal in asking the for a few in-game items for free, but know this: the person you're asking (ie: me) has probably been asked that question by 10 different people already today, and 10 people yesterday and 10 people the day before...

You're seen as JUST ANOTHER BEGGAR. Beggars are annoying on the game just like they are in Real Life when you're walking down the street and 5-10 complete or near-complete strangers come up and ask you for change.

Please don't beg for handouts from me. I'm perfectly willing to give you a "job" cutting wood or mining ores, and I'll even pay you in cash or equipment (up to and including mith stuff) so you get what you need, but the quickest way to my Ignore list and permanent non-chat status with me is to beg for handouts.

Begging just is NOT cool.

And in closing, advertising how broke or poor you are isn't cool either - it's begging without even having the guts to ask the direct question of "can I have something from you to relieve my broke or poor situation?"

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blogging, and I apologize to you non-beggars out there for having to read this, although I'm sure you agree wholeheartedly with this post.

Quick Runescape money using Cow Hides

Cow hides (coming, of course, from cows) are not wonderfully convenient to collect, and not very lucrative if you collected them and sold them to the shop, but they're easy to get a hold of and quite lucrative if you're in the right city and selling them at the bank through the Player Market.

In Runescape Cow hides are the very first thing that Crafters work with in large quantities to raise their Crafting skill, and since Crafting is available on both the Members and Non-Members servers, you're guaranteed to find someone online who is working on building that skill and who is looking to buy 100, 500 or even 1000 and more cow hides!

Wait, it gets better - not only will players be looking for large amounts of cow hides, they're willing to pay 100-125gp for EACH COW HIDE! Just think - 4 runs back and forth to the cow fields and bringing back a nearly-full inventory of hides, you'd likely end up with 100 hides, and you could sell them for 10-12k.

Tell me that's not as easy as (cow?) pie?!?!

All right, so you know how many you're going to collect and how much money you're going to make on it, now you need to know where the best place is to hang around in order to sell your wares.

Al Kahrid is the main central hub for building the skill of Crafting on Runescape. Both on Free and Member servers, there are regularly people there screaming for cow hides. Everyone is also quite familiar with cow hide buying prices, so it's difficult for you to go beyond the range of 100-125gp each hide, but you can try.

There ya go! Another useful tip for getting quick cash on Runescape.

PS: As a bonus, here's a bit of a Runescape money cheat: You can hire low-level players to collect cow hides for you, and you can merchant the hides afterwards without having had to do the actual collection. Offer to pay a low level player 20 gp per cow hide they bring you, tell them you want over 100 hides, and while you pay 2000 coins for the hides, you can turn around and resell them for 8000-10000 coins more! Shh, don't tell the folks you've hired!!

PSS: No, I do not merchant cow hides. I don't sell them either.

Changing your Runescape basic clothing

When you first started playing Runescape, part of the setup of your character was to choose things like hairstyle, haircolor, and clothing styles and colors. From there, most of the changes to your Avatar's appearance will be in the form of the different armors you're wearing.

However, if you're interested in changing your clothing, there is an NPC in Varrock who can help you out with that. Southwest of the statue in the middle of Varrock, there is a clothing shop run by Thessalia - she's who you want to talk to.

For a mere 500 coins (per top or pants change) and a lot of clicking through her chatter, you can get a "makeover" from her which allows you to re-select your top and pants styles and colors.

Check it out if you're tired of lookin' at yourself without armor on!

Ode to the Runescape Blast Furnace, pt 2

In the previous Blast Furnace entry, I eluded to some special tips for those working with Mithril and higher at the Runescape Blast Furnace, so this is the entry about that.

Besides just being a highly efficient place to make bars (because using the Blast Furnace halves the number of coal you need when creating steel, mithril, addy and rune), the Blast Furnace is an awesome place to use a bit of strategy to get huge amounts of smithing experience.

This strategy doesn't work with Steel nor Iron in the Blast Furnace area because Jorvik doesn't trade in armors made from those metals.

The basic premise of this strategy is to take a look at Jorvik's inventory, find a world that has 10 or less of some item you can smith, and then do your smithing according to what you discover. Sell your smithed items to Jorvik, and hop worlds when there are over 10 of the items you can smith in the world you're in at the time.

Depending on what time of day you do this, you can stay smithing for an awful long time with the $ you generate from this strategy - buying ores with the money you make, and selling the products to Jorvik, and hopping worlds when the time is right. Your 50k will last and last if you make the right things that Jorvik needs and hop worlds when his store is full or when the ores in the world you're in are below 50 of what you're using. Obviously, the more ores you bring in, the longer you can go as well.

This last bit is, of course, because the less ore in stock, the more expensive it is to buy those ores from Ordan. This is why the general strategy of "super-stocking" Ordan's inventory of any one ore is a decent one if you're all alone in the Blast Furnace, because when you buy them back they'll be cheaper, which is especially important for ores like mithril and above.

Becoming a Runescape Member: Valdesta's Reasons, Part 3

Yet another reason why I love to be a member surrounds the topic of mining coal conveniently.

The Coal Trains west of Seers Village and McGruber Woods is a great place to gather coal when that's the only thing you want to mine (and coal is something that is constantly being bought and sold in the Player Market). Because of the way Runescape's coal trains work, you can store up to 120 ores of coal (about 5 inventory loads) in the coal train carts near the mining area, and then run back and pull the ores out from the coal train carts which are near Seers Village bank in order to store them.

The mining area itself has 18 coal rocks to mine, so there's generally enough to go around between the different members worlds (if your world is busy there, hop to another world). There are Dwarf Miners hanging around that you can talk to regarding use of the coal carts, and then in order to put your ores into the cart, you click on an ore in your inventory then click on the coal train cart, and as long as the cart isn't full, all of the ores in your inventory will be placed into it.

There are aggressive lvl 27 Giant Bats around that will attack you if you're low enough level, so keep that in mind if you're a low-level Runescapian.

As with anything else on this game, as well, you don't have to remove the coal ores from the coal carts immediately and nobody else can take your ores - in fact, this time when I visited the carts I found I already had 87 coal ore still waiting in the carts for me, so my mining trip the first time was shortened because I forgot to fully empty the carts last time I was doing this.

Out of all the mining spots on the game, this is my favorite for coal, because of how I can focus first on mining a bunch, then on moving them all to the bank all at once. When I look at how many coal I have in the bank after a bit of coal train mining, I feel a real sense of Runescape accomplishment :)

Remember, when you're mining, only one person can get an ore from a rock, so find some rocks that nobody is standing in front of and stake your claim, but unless you don't mind other people doing it back to you (or if someone IS doing it back to you right now) try to let other people have the rocks they're at, and work on your own. If you have a so-called "mining jerk" (as I call those who don't respect other ppl already mining a rock) hanging around who is higher level and thus faster than you, consider hopping worlds instead of letting yourself feel even one ounce of frustration at the other player (who you cannot control).

Ode to the Runescape Blast Furnace, pt 1

THIS IS AN ADVANCED *MEMBERS* RUNESCAPE ENTRY. The Blast furnace is best used by those with smithing lvl 60+ and crafting of at least lvl 40.

If I could write poetry about the parts of Runescape that I love for various reasons, the Blast Furnace would be the first thing I'd write about. But... I'm not a poet. Life doesn't come to me in rhymes and I personally don't "get" poetry that doesn't rhyme. To me, if it doesn't rhyme, it's a story, not a poem. But that's my opinion ;)

To be honest, it took me a bit to "get" how to use the Blast Furnace to its full capacity, but once I figured out how to use it to its full potential, life became very easy around the furnace.

I've read other help guides about the Blast Furnace and I'd like to say that I AM going to be incorporating some of their strategies into mine, as I did follow their advice to get partway through my journey towards understanding.

I regularly refer to http://www.runehq.com for information about how things work on Runescape, plus any quest info or minigame info I'm looking for. Blast Furnace is considered a 'minigame' and that's where it's listed on the Rune HQ site. I strongly recommend the Rune HQ site, it has quality content and great stuff that I don't intend to cover in this blog (quest stuff specifically).

But enough about the red tape, let's jump into useful information about the Blast Furnace itself.

First off, in order to make good timely use of the Blast Furnace, it's best if you bring 25k with you if you're making steel bars, and bring all of your ores in note format instead of bringing them load by load. If you're making mithril+ bars, consider bringing 50k with you, but still, bring all of your ores in note format.

Secondly, when you get to the Blast Furnace itself, talk with Ordan and see what his ore situation is like. If someone's been there before you and drained all the coal way down below 100, hop worlds because coal will cost too much to change from note to ores in the world you're currently in. The same thing applies for the iron or mithril+ ores you're going to be using, but I find it's coal that normally gets drained down.

If you're making iron or steel bars, that's all the checking you really have to do - if the ore situation is good, this is a good world to get started in.

If you're making mithril or better bars, you can decide between two strategies - exactly like the iron and steel bars, or Valdesta's extended strategy which includes dealing with Jorzik and his equipment stock. This extended strategy will be discussed in a future entry.

Getting Started

Okay, now you've determined that there's enough ores to work well in this world, or you've found a world that has a full stock of ores, 100 in each or very close.

Here is my first "whole whack of tips" about how to use the Blast Furnace, for folks who are new to it and for folks who are experienced as well:

This minigame CAN be handled by one person alone, as long as that person has adequate skill levels in crafting, firebuilding and smithing.
Pick up the hammer, bucket and spade that are laying around, don't bother to bring your own.
Remember, the Blast Furnace uses half the number of coal to make bars - that is, one coal + one iron ore = one steel bar, and two coal + one mithril ore = one mithril bar.
When exchanging notes for ores, sell 10 ore notes, then buy the 10 ores back. When your inventory is full, put the ores on the conveyer belt and repeat your process.
The Blast Furnace can hold over 200 coal ore at a time, but only 28 of other ores. You're best to fill the furnace up with coal first, so you don't have to worry about them for a while.
Listen to the Dwarf Foreman when you're pumping. If he says the stove is out, fill it more. About 5 scoops does fine for me if I'm quick, but 10 is better for if the pipes keep bursting while you pump.
If the Dwarf Foreman says anything about the conveyer belt and you cannot see any ores (of your own) on the belt, don't worry about running the conveyer belt.
Watch while you're pumping, for the pipes to break and start puffing. Especially if you're alone, stay keen and stay on 'run' and be quick to fix the broken pipes, as the stove goes out if you aren't.
If you angle your view correctly while you're pumping, you can see when the bars are done smelting without anyone watching the temperature guage to tell you (see the image up top and the red arrow pointing at the bar dispenser exploding when it's ready for you to stop pumping)
By creating "stackable" items like knives, arrow tips and the likes, you can stay in the Blast Furnace area longer before needing to return to a bank to exchange items.

In general, I don't like the thought of telling people exactly how to play the game, so I'm not going to make a step by step explanation of how to use the Runescape Blast Furnace. However, if there are any tips you'd like to include, please leave a comment on this entry and I'll be glad to add the tips to future entries.

As for the Extended strategy for folks working with Mithril bars and above, you'll just have to wait! :)

Runescape "Friends List" delays

Wow, trading is becoming more and more difficult these days for some reason - my personal opinion (and this is not backed up by anything real), is that Jagex is maybe making it so characters have to be logged in for a specific length of time before they actually get logged into the Friends server when load is high, which is something that is GOOD and something we're glad Jagex has taken a look at in terms of reducing lag on the game servers.

However, the difficulty with this delay during peak times is that now it's not quite as easy for players like me to "hop worlds" and trade with fellow players like you.

Before, I used to tell you to meet me at the Varrock West Bank, and I'd rely on seeing your little green dot to bring us together. Now, sometimes my list doesn't show for 10 minutes of login time!

It looks like we may have to be more specific about our meeting places, and have them be out of the main crowded areas so we can find each other before the Friends server registers both of us online when I world hop to conduct the trade (before we turn into green dots). We'll have to pay more attention.

That works for me if it keeps the game low on lag, even during peak hours!

Bought Mith eq, Taking on bigger stuff in Runescape Edgeville Dungeon

(battle adventures continued from previous battle entry)

As I approached defense of 20 and the ability to wear mithril equipment, I hung around Varrock west bank, directly north of a smithing anvil, and advertised what I was looking for. Of course, I went onto the Miniclip forum to figure out what a reasonable price was to buy these items, and went from there. Since I wasn't able to get "full mith with kite", but rather half of the items from one person and the rest from another, I ended up paying about 20k in total instead of 15k.

But that's okay, because now I'm completely decked out in mithril, and I have a mith scimitar waiting for me when my attack gets to lvl 20 as well, which isn't far off.

I then ventured back to the Edgeville dungeon, and went back to the Zombies I was killing earlier. On my way through, a nearby lvl 22 skeleton attacked and followed me right to the Zombies area, so I had to kill him after killing my first zombie.

He dropped bones AND 15 air runes! Wow, hey, (I figured) I'm skipping these zombies and taking on the Skeletons! Even if they require me to eat a little bit more often and therefore my healing won't last as long. After 10 more skeletons and 39 coins and 10 bones later... I decided to try my luck on the lvl 28 Hobgoblins.

Halfway through the only hobgoblin I managed to kill, my attack advanced to lvl 20 and I was able to wield my mithril scimitar and replace the steel one. The fight went much faster from there, but it still took 6 herring to finish him off completely, over the whole fight.

The hobgoblin dropped bones and a limpwurt root. I know limps have value on members servers as part of herblore, but I'm not sure what their purpose is to free members. Let me know on the game if you know :)

I was pleased to have killed a lvl 28 Hobgoblin, because even though it took a bunch of healing I knew I could take on a Hill Giant and not get flattened. Always good to know!

Hill Giants area is somewhere my character could live for a very long time (if it weren't for the immense competition!), and could profit quite tidily from as she advances attack, strength, defense, range and magic skills. For example, there was someone buying big bones in the area who was offering 200 coins per big bone, and with the drops that Hill Giants offer, there were a lot of new things to be bringing back to the bank for storage and usage later - iron and steel arrows, fire and mind runes, uncut sapphires, and limpwurt roots.

I'm pretty sure it was Big Bones where I first started to make some serious money in Runescape with my primary character. I neglected my prayer skill for a long time, instead choosing to sell the big bones for 20-25k per 100 in the Varrock shop. I rarely had to advertise more than a couple minutes to sell 'em, at least on Members worlds.

Welcome to Runescape's Edgeville Dungeon

So, my secondary character is combat 20 now (my primary is combat 80) and I'm continuing my quest to find good places to raise my combat level on the free servers.

My defense, strength and attack levels are all around 16-18. I'm wearing full steel and wielding a steel scimitar. I've done enough mining and smithing and selling to have 25k in the bank, for when I want to buy full mith at def 20. I've advanced my fishing and cooking to 40 and have a bunch of healing in my bank as a result. You can read previous entries in this blog to find out more details about my preparation for going out for extended periods of battle.

Edgeville and its Dungeon

Edgeville itself is directly north of Barbarian Village, which is along the road west from Varrock. When you're going to Edgeville, you can actually see the Edgeville Dungeon entrance before you can see the bank itself, but you have to go almost to the bank entrance to get into the building that holds the Dungeon's entrance.

This dungeon is one that can provide battle sites for many many levels. I wandered past some lvl 3 giant rats, lvl 2 giant spiders and lvl 1 mice before finding lvl 21 and 25 skeletons (which weren't aggressive). Further in, there are lvl 18 and lvl 24 zombies, lvl 28 hobgoblins, and lvl 28 Hill Giants, which not only drop big bones, but herbs, runes, and other goodies.

And as a bonus, if you can get all the way through to the Hill Giants, there's a room just before the Giants that has lvl 24 zombies in it - and a key laying on the floor in the back of the room. The key opens the door at the top of the stairs in the Giant area, and provides you with a short route to the Giants from Varrock (head southeast from the exit to get to the road to Varrock).

Giants is a great place to train range and magic, because it's a high-competition area and you can attack from quite far off, sometimes so far off that the giant doesn't know who is hitting him, and he doesn't come to attack you!!

I regularly get asked what my combat level is on Runescape by folks who have found this blog, so I thought I'd post my current stats for all to see and oogle over.

I just recently attained Smithing lvl 70, and now I'm working my butt off to get to smithing 75 so I can make addy arrow tips for my hunting!

Runescape Beginner Fighting, Finders Keepers

While I was trying my skill against the Town Guards at the southern entrance to Varrock, some low-level character who had been mining tin and copper happened across the aggressive and mean lvl 20 Dark Wizards that hide amongst the more innocuous lvl 7 Dark Wizards south of Varrock in the Stone Henges area.

This low-level character wasn't lucky like me when he came across this Wizard with its strong ranged magical attack, he didn't have healing with him, and he died, right next to me.

Of course, I looted his corpse. I took his cape (and put it on) and his gloves, and as much of his copper ore as I could carry.

Then, instead of hanging around, I figured I'd go and do something else for 5-10 minutes. I mean, I still do kinda feel bad for taking the guy's stuff, but at the same time I know it would happen to me as well - others would loot my corpse - and the thought doesn't bother me. Instead, it motivates me to keep sharp in my adventuring, and play smart so I have 'outs' in case I start to get in over my head.

I hope the raw reality of the competitive environment inspires you that way as well, instead of inspiring you towards whining at other players who have looted your corpse, taking even the last few pieces of your belongings just as you run up to try to recover something from it.

If you feel like whining, take a break. Go get a drink, go wash your face, go brush your teeth. It's only a game, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't learn to play smart.

Fast Runescape mining experience, related fast Runescape cash opportunity

Linkbuilder has a suggestion about gaining Mining levels quickly, since ores like coal, mithril, addy and rune sell for nice prices on the player market.

In Runescape, gaining levels in the Mining Skill is one of the surest ways to wealth in the game.

At the time of this post, Linkbuilder is lvl 87 Mining, and is able to earn 1 million gp in three hours of game time by mining runite in the Hero’s Guild - and you can earn that much too - even if you are not a Runescape Member.

I'd like to add that a secondary Runescape fast cash strategy plays off of Linkbuilder's - if you can find someone who is following Linkbuilder's strategy, you can profit from their gaining of mining experience by "running" the ores to the bank for them. They mine, you run the ores to the bank, you keep the ores, you get all the money for the ores, but the other player gets all the experience.

Sounds great to me!

Beginner Fighting, How To Tell What To Attack

Runescape does pretty well at the low levels of judging whether an opponent is too much higher level than the player, and letting the player know by making the actual attack more purposeful than just the standard left-click-on-target.

For instance, at Runescape Combat Level 16, heading out of Varrock to the south, I wander by the Town Guards and my default selection on them is not to attack, it's to pick-pocket them. I have to right-click the guard and select "Attack Town Guard" in order to do it.

Sure, I can't pick-pocket them either, but at least if I try that I won't get attacked and killed if I'm not paying proper attention!

Seeing that I was just taking on lvl 7-8 opponents, I can see why a lvl 21 guard might be a bit tough for me, but hey, I'm tough, and I want to see just how tough this guard guy is.

If he's really tough, I can run, right? And I have some healing with me (cooked pike, my own catches) so I don't have to lick my wounds for very long.

I actually didn't do too badly with the first one! I didn't even have to eat any of my fish. That goes to show the attack advantage that Wizards have on folks with metal armor, compared to folks trying to pierce it with a metal sword. The guards were no match, but those Wizards roasted my armored self.

Town Guards also drop clues to Level 1 Treasure Trails (members only), so I decided to hang around for a while and take on a few more guards before continuing on my journey of exploration. Future battles proved to require more healing than the first, but with only two guards there, and regular competition for those guards, I was soon in the mood to be 'movin on'.

Quick Runescape Money using Logs, comment by Bowhagen

Here are some useful comments from Bowhagen about what route to follow to get $$ for decent equipment within an hour or less of having left Tutorial Island:

My game name is Bowhagen.

When i was a noob i found a good way to make my woodcutting easier:

First finish tutorial island, when you arrive in lumbridge you'll a bronze sword, bronze axe, wooden shield, shortbow, 25 arrows, and food plus some runes and other small stuff. Go North to the general store and sell your sword, shield, food items, etc. Keep the runes and arrows but sell off everything else. Don't worry, in a hour you'll have a lot of money for a noob!!

Go south to the axe shop and buy a iron axe and go to Draynor to cut 112 regular logs and you should be around level 20 or more meaning you can cut Oak, but stick with regular since they're easier and sell for more! I got 10k in a half an hour with just 500+ regular logs! I sold for 20gp each!

Then you can buy iron armor or steel even mith but I doubt you can wield mith with just 30 mins of game play!

Beginner Fighting, In The Bar - Men and Women

If you haven't already noticed when you walk by them, generally there are a bunch of Men and Women (lvl 2) who wander around in the Pubs on Runescape.

And a lot of the time, there are players much mightier than you who are killing these small opponents.

Why??

Because, you see, Men and Women are amongst the few, the special, the oft-competed-for... those who carry clues to Treasure Trails.

A player can only have one clue going at a time, so if you choose to kill Men and Women looking for a clue to a Treasure Trail, be sure to either store the clue or start on the Trail as soon as you get the clue.

Pubs are another area that are great to go to in order to clean up the bones other people leave laying around. Your prayer level will thank you, and once your prayer level gets to the mid-to-high levels which include protection from various types of attacks, your exploring ability will expand and increase the fun for you.

At any rate, usually in a bar, aside from the plethora of Men and Women hanging about, there is a bartender of some sort. As with any bartender IRL, they're usually good people to talk to, because they know the ins and outs of the town. Sure, some of the bartenders just want to sell booze, but others will give advice and sell specialty drinks as well, so be sure to check out the warez of all the pubs you come across, and don't assume they're all the same.

Along with the Bartender, it's a good idea to talk to all the characters for whom you do not have a 'kill' option. Most people are part of a quest in some way and therefore they may not talk to you at this time, but keep them in mind because once you get partway through certain quests, those characters might be quite eager to talk to you.

When you become a member go to Seers Village and start collecting flax, then spin it in a house nearby to make bow strings until you have 100 then sell it for 10k (15k if you're lucky).

I did this and I earned 100k in a hour.

Great idea! I, Valdesta, always see people buying and selling flax in the Seers Village bank. Maple logs are very popular there as well, since they're right behind the bank.

Becoming a Runescape Member: Valdesta's Reasons, Part 2

Another reason I wanted to become a Runescape member was the expansion of skills available to me.

Herblore was the first 'members' thing I really got hooked into doing for long periods of time in Runescape.

Where do I get started with Herblore?

You have to complete the quest that the druids dressed in white in north Taverley send you on. For more quest information, check out http://www.runehq.com (not my site). I don't help with quests. Personally I hate them and do them only when I absolutely have to ;)

Okay, I've finished the quest, now where can I find herbs?

In the dungeon south of Taverley (check your map!), there are 8 or so lvl 13 Chaos druids, dressed in red and white. Generally, there are other players there already camped out, but as long as the druids are resetting faster than they can be killed, the world you're in is great. Don't expect to find a world where NOBODY is playing in that area, as it's a very popular area.

The Chaos druids have regular herblore drops when you kill them - unidentified herbs (aka "unid's" on the buy/sell market), vials of water and snape grass are often found. Also, Chaos druids drop valuable runes - Laws, Natures and Airs are the one's you'll see regularly, but occasionally they'll drop chaos or death runes as well.

There are also Chaos druids in the Edgeville dungeon, just on the inside edge of the underground Wilderness there, past the muggers. These Chaos druids are aggressive which makes killing the next one easier (they attack you, you don't have to attack them first), but you've also got to pay attention to ensure you're not getting attacked by other players who are also there primarily for the Chaos druids and what they drop.

I can't identify most of these herbs!! What now??

At low levels, this is to be expected.

My advice is to store the unidentified herbs and keep on accumulating more, trying to identify every one you pick up. As your herblore levels advance you can identify more herb types, so if you keep a good bank store of the unidentified herbs, you'll get an experience boost by having stored herbs ready for identification.

You can also sell "unid's" as they're called, on the open player market (advertise at banks), for 1000 coins, or 1k each. I kept all the herbs until I got to being able to recognize Aventoe and then I decided to take a break so I sold all the unid's I had left and made a tidy profit from it.

Okay, I have a herb and a vial of water. Now what?

Click on the herb, click on the vial of water. Viola, if you are high enough level, you've just made an "unfinished potion". Now you need to find the potion's second ingredient (listed on the Runescape Manual ... Skills pages) and click on it and then on the unfinished potion, to finish it.

You would do well to explore and find places where the secondary potion ingredients spawn naturally in the world. I know of such places for snape grass, and have mentioned the availability of unicorn horns in the Wilderness in a previous entry. Limpwurt roots can be collected in a few spots as well, although generally they're monster drops and aren't just laying around on the ground.

I like energy potions, they're very useful for my excursions into the Wilderness.

I will enjoy Weapon Poison when I finally get to it, but I'm still a long ways off.

Strength potions are sellable in free worlds and can be sold for 1k each, which is nice.

Antipoison is a MUST if you're exploring far away from civilization and don't have teleports.

Fighting in the beginning levels, Pt 2, Barbarian Village

After my bit of time fighting the Dark Wizards near Draynor Bank, I had progressed a few attack and defense levels, and am now at Combat 16.

I figured I'd wander around Draynor some more and see if there was anything worth attacking, but there really wasn't, so I continued north from Draynor, running past the spooky forest with the Giant Spider, until I found the Barbarian Village.

From looking on http://www.runehq.com in the Beastiary, I know that the Barbarians there are level 7, which is the same level as the Dark Wizards.

The Barbarians drop a few coins along with their bones (this is a great place to train prayer as others tend to leave their bones laying on the ground for you to pick up and bury and get the points from!), and occasionally drop bronze axes and bronze arrows. Make sure to keep two or three bronze axes in your bank account initially, in case you lose your original axe. It's always good to have an extra axe kicking around in case your current one is lost or destroyed in some way.

As you can see, there are some mining spots (tin and coal) available in the Barbarian Village, but no bank in the town. You'll have to head north into Edgeville or follow the road going east over the bridge and into Varrock to find a bank.

Aside from the meagre loot mentioned above, I also picked up a few staves. Not sure what they're worth but any bit of money helps at this point, right??! There were also pie dishes and bowls that showed up periodically, but those were from the potters doing their work in the south part of Barbarian Village. I left those alone, as I see no use for them right now.

After a while, with 30 new bronze arrows, 3 staves, and 4 bronze axes in tow, I headed east towards Varrock.

On the way, I found some more lvl 5 Goblins, just across the river from the Barbarian Village. I killed a couple for the fun of it and buried their bones beside their comrades who still stand, breathing.

After cleaning my blade of disgusting Goblin slime, I contined east into Varrock and visited the West Varrock bank to reset my inventory for another adventure out.

Fighting in the beginning levels

Specific for this blog, I've set up a secondary character which I play periodically to get ideas for what to write about here.

For today's topic, as a celebration of attaining fishing lvl 40 and cooking above lvl 40 (so I can both catch and cook lobster), I've decided to take my new character out for battle.

She bought full steel armor + kite shield for 5k (proceeds from the easy money mining excursion I wrote about a couple weeks ago) and filled her inventory with cooked pike from our fishing over the last while, and headed out, looking for a worthy foe, heading east from the Draynor Bank, and south along the shoreline.

At her current combat level of 14, there are not a lot of opponents she can take on and win. But she's tired of lvl 2 Goblins, and rats, and mice.

After a quick visit to the Wizards Tower along the southern shoreline between Lumbridge and Draynor (where the lvl 9 mages smoked my metal-clad self with fire strikes), I ventured further east, keeping south of the fence that separates the swamp from southern Lumbridge.

There, I found two lvl 5 Goblins wandering around who were more of a challenge than the lvl 2's to the north, but didn't smoke me like the Wizards had done. And of course, Goblins occasionally drop things like runes, bronze equipment (including arrows) and a few coins.

After a while of killing those goblins, I decided to go out to find a new opponent - one more worthy than the goblins, but less worthy than those Wizards with their flame strikes.

Lo and behold! What I found ended up being right back where I started, just south of the Draynor Bank! It turns out that those Dark Wizards that caused me anguish when I was brand new at lvl 3 and trying to fish along the ocean bank there, with the small net... are perfect opponents for me now.

And hey! They drop runes that I can sell at the shop for nice prices!! Nature runes which can be sold for 300gp each, and chaos runes which probably go for the same, but I think I'll keep them for future mage efforts, as I know chaos are good attack runes.

Speaking of the future mage efforts, the Dark Wizards also drop black hats and black robe parts, so I've got the start of my mage outfit, too!

Usually most people hanging out with the Dark Wizards are either fishing or woodcutting, but this time there were others fighting the Wizards as well, so with the increased competition I decided to move on and find another place.

But I'll save that for another entry!

Take Any Opportunity to Build Your Skills

Runescape has a large number of skills that players can work on, and many different items on the game come into play because of these skills (I was so glad to finally find a use for swamp tar, for example).

The key to wealth in Runescape is to not waste what you've got access to, just because you don't know what it's for.

Almost any item you can get on the game has a resale value - either at a shop, or more likely, in player-to-player sales at a bank.

Some of the items may only be of use to members, and some of the items may be useful to both free and member players, but be more valuable to members. Regular logs are one thing that come to mind for me in this situation - for free players, they're only good for firemaking skills and for cooking, but for members, the logs are also good for fletching, which is a skill that can make playing as a Ranger much more affordable than for free players. Easy money, right there!

Pay attention when you're in banks, and see what people are asking to buy, and what others are offering to sell. Review the pricing guide on Miniclip forums, or on the many Runescape help sites around the 'net. Then, when you feel you know the value of what you have to offer, collect a bunch and sell them yourself, instead of dropping them on the ground.

When it comes to fishing and cooking, always take the extra few minutes to cook what you catch, even if you're only fishing for experience and are going to be dropping the fish afterwards. It's great to get your fishing level to 40 quickly and be able to fish lobsters, but cooked lobsters sell for twice as much as raw ones!

Even bones are something you can collect and resell to other players. 100 regular bones can net you 10k at the bank... 100 big bones can net you 25k. There are always players looking to quickly boost their prayer levels, so why don't you be the person who profits from that?

Reduced Battling Expenses
Healing is a part of going out exploring and taking on creatures in battle. You can't get out of needing healing unless you attack monsters WAY below your level, but at that point you're not getting much experience nor are you picking up many things from the corpses that you can sell for a little extra cash. If you fish and keep the cooked fish around, you don't have to BUY healing from anyone else, and even if you die, you could have a large collection of food to help you get going again.

Selling Fish For Profit

The fish shop in Port Sarim accepts a wide variety of RAW fish, and will pay you a bit for each of the fish you sell to them. The more of a certain type of fish they have, the less they'll pay you for that type of fish, so you may need to "world-hop" and find worlds where the fish shop is emptier in the specific fishes you're looking to sell.

I personally did a lot of fish selling when I was low level, as a way to get some cash for upgrading my equipment. I found that sardines sell really nicely at the fish shop, but I sold all types of fish there.

Once you're level 40 and beyond, you can fish for lobster and instead of selling them to the store, you can sell them for 200-250 per cooked lobster to the player market by advertising at banks. Be sure you have at least 100 COOKED lobster to make it worthwhile for players to buy from you, and that'll pay you 20-25k!!

I have done my own fishing and have a nice collection of lobster for my own battling needs. I never sell my lobster to players, but lobsters (or "lobbies" as they're also called) are very popular sources of healing for players and therefore it should be quite easy to sell your product to your friends or players hanging around in whatever bank you choose to visit.

Lobsters. Mmm. Drowned in butter, soft tasty flesh... Mmm.

Of course, the lobsters on Runescape aren't quite like that... but I still love Lobster IRL so anyone who wants to take me out for dinner, Lobster dinner would rock... ;)

Okay, onto the actual topic of this entry - that is, the financial benefits of training your fishing level up to at least 40 as soon as you can tolerate, and then the financial benefits of collecting lots of lobsters to sell.

Main Benefits:

0 Reliable stream of portable healing for your battles
0 Reduced battling expenses
0 Healing to sell to the fish shop in Port Sarim, or other players for a profit

Portable Healing

Portable healing is healing that you carry with you while you explore or battle, so you can heal yourself without having to return to civilization. The higher level the healing item, the more it tends to heal. This is definitely true with fish.

Don't be afraid to collect 250 of each type of fish in your bank account while you're fishing - you can sell them later, or you may find yourself using a lot of them while you're exploring and adventuring and battling. As you get bigger, you can remove the shrimps and anchovies, etc, from your bank account in note format, and drop the notes to get rid of them since shrimp, anchovies, sardines and herring don't heal very much (but are great when you have under 10 hit points), and therefore make room for the fish that heal well.

You can also hang around fishing places with a bunch of people currently fishing, because odds are someone is fishing for experience and you'll be able to pick up higher-healing fish like trout, pike, salmon or tuna. If you're lucky someone is also working on improving their culinary/cooking skill and will drop cooked fish, ready to eat!

Please don't ask whether anyone is giving away free fish, however - if it's not on the ground, go on about your business and come back later. Look right under the feet of where the people are fishing, take advantage of opportunities as they arise, but don't be a beggar.

Runescape Autominers Don't Exist

Sept 2007 Update: Yes, there are auto-miners, auto-fishers, auto-wood choppers available. This is a natural progression of any online game. Keep in mind, however, that if you use them and get caught, you risk losing your account with all of your hard work. If you're going to bot, do it on a throw-away account, not your main.

That being said, here's my original entry which is still valid as well:

All over on the 'net there are references to the Runescape Autominer that used to be useful to players.

I believe that was either in the Runescape 1 days or early early in the Runescape 2 days because in the year I've played Runescape 2 (which is the Runescape most people know now) this bot hasn't worked.

Jagex made some changes to the display of its software to account for things which track clicks and try to replicate them to be things like autominers, etc. Now, your Runescape screen (above the chat window) drifts slightly every once in a while - just a few pixels, but enough to screw up autominers and autoclickers. [sept 2007 update - Jagex will continue to make modifications that will screw with your autoclickers and you'll have to continue to upgrade/update/fix your side to make it work again. If you are very good at this type of thing, go for it. If you're not, don't waste your time]

So, don't waste your time with them. They don't work for more than about 20 minutes at a time if you can get them to work at all.

How "Combat Level" works

When you run around in Runescape, and see other players running around, the level you see in conjunction with their player name is that player's combat level. When someone asks you what level you are without specifying a skill, that's generally what level they're talking about. And in the Wilderness, it's your combat level that plays in to who can and cannot attack you as you wander about in the wild.

Combat level is raised along with your regular skills, but it is not a specific skill of its own like mining or smithing or fishing - it's actually something that a number of different skills all add up and create. The following skills all contribute to your Combat Level rating:

Attack
Strength
Defense
Prayer
Magic
Ranged

So, if any of these skills are low, they will bring down your "combat average" which makes up your Combat Level.

Note, that "pure" players may therefore have quite high levels in any one or two skills but their Combat Level would be deceivingly low for how much they could hurt you in the Wilderness with those specifically-trained skills.

Never underestimate your opponent, and never let anyone taunt you into the Wilderness with them. Play smart!

Spending time with the world map

Runescape is a large world, and while there are roads leading to and from the major cities and locations, there's a lot more of the world that goes off of the beaten path and the best way to get around successfully is to use the World Map regularly and explore and visit the different cities that you can access.

In time you'll get used to the lay of the land and you won't need to use the World Map as much, but initially, or when you're in a new area and not exactly sure which direction to go, the map is very useful in helping you use your precious energy efficiently.

The Jagex map is kind of slow to load on my computer, and finicky as well - it doesn't like to be ctrl-tab'd in behind other applications when it's loading, for example, but once it's loaded up it's a great adventurer tool. I've gone on many adventures to a new dungeon in my playing days, hunting around to see what's out there that I can take on and win.

Becoming a Member: Valdesta's Reasons, Part 1

I started playing Runescape in July 2004 after my pre-teen neice and nephew showed it to me when I was visiting. I was immediately hooked, and even though I spent the next month or so trying out a whole bunch of Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games, Runescape was the only one that really held my attention for any length of time.

So, after 30 days of playing on the free servers and advancing my player up so my main skills were in the mid-thirties, I registered and become a member.

The very first thing I'd like to say ROCKS about being a member is the sheer size of the world. Having 1200 members on a members server is so incredibly less crowded than having 800 people on a free world, because there are so many cities for players to spread out to on the members servers.

Immediately, competition for ore and monsters close to town is reduced, even in the same cities the free players overwhelm on free servers.

Immediately, there are a whole LOT more places that offer what you're looking for - ores, stores, specialty shops... nevermind quests and the equipment/rewards they offer!

The Secret Cooking Pot in Lumbridge

Did you know that there's a cooking pot south of the smelting furnace in Lumbridge?

NO??!!

Neither did I, largely because it's in a building that is not marked as anything special. However, it's a good thing to know, because that frees up holding slots you might have otherwise used for an axe and/or a tinderbox.

I find that often other players, at least on the free worlds, are fishing from the same river in Lumbridge and someone else lights a fire occasionally, so I use their fires to cook when I can, but it's sure nice to have that cooking pot closeby when I'm all alone.
