The Wilderness, aka "wildy"
The Wilderness (aka "wildy") is Runescape's solution for addressing the separate needs of players who enjoy player-versus-player action without compromising playability for those of us who aren't pvp-oriented and would rather not have to worry about being attacked by a being smarter than the average NPC.
Wildy has benefits for non-player killers (npk's = non player killers, pk = player killers) as well as for pk's, and these benefits bring the two groups together in the dangerous environment, while shops and cities bring the players together in a safe environment.
Personally, I'm an npk player, and thus my strategies will be towards helping people avoid pk's when trying to benefit from some of the things that are available in the Wilderness. If you know of a good PK strategy blog please leave a comment and a link and I'll be happy to point pk people there.
Three rules of NPK safety in the Wilderness
- Always pay attention to your long-range viewer. The few seconds warning you get that someone is coming down on you may save your life.
- Never bring anything into the Wildy that you're not willing to lose to death.
- Walk when you're safe so you can run away when you're pursued.
"Why would I want to go into the Wilderness anyway??"
As mentioned earlier, wildy has great potential rewards for those who brave it. Here are some things I found much easier to obtain in the Wilderness, with WAY less competition:
- Ores - the few mining spots in the Wilderness are MUCH larger than the regular mining spots, especially on free worlds. Coal, Iron, Mithril, and Addy with more available than you can mine before they reset, if you find the right mining spots.
- Unicorn Horns - these are used by members as part of herblore. Black Unicorns in the low-level Wilderness are plentiful and reset quickly.
- White Berries - again, for members, these are for making potions. White berries are not available in very many places, the most available is in lvl 43 Wilderness.
And in general, if you find you're being followed or honed in on, run away and teleport to safety (remember, if you're deeper than lvl 20 wildy, you have to come back some, as tports don't work past 20), or run away and log out. You can change worlds if you want, but generally waiting 5 minutes will ensure your safety to return. Most PK players have short attention spans ;)
If you find anything else really neat in the wildy that you'd like to tell me about, leave a comment!

my account has been hacked and im tired of it?
hmm..nothing here 4 a lvl 89?
i think they should make a level 0 wildy so u can only attack player that are the same level as u coz it really anoyying when ur fightin some one and then some onet a level here than me attack me.
I just dont get it. I mean, I'm a combat level 56 person, but I still haven't killed anyone yet. I tried magic but that never works. I try using my weapons but that doesn't work either. I just lost all my stuff and I am recovering. So, is there anyway I can at least kill one person? I am not a PKer person or anything..I just want to be ready when someone tries to attack. Any tips..?
i have a question. I was in the edgeville dungeon wilderness area (wilderness level 2) when a level 89 killed me with magic. At the time I was only level 76 combat, so my question is: Does magic follow the same rules in the wildy as melee combat?
Here are a couple good ways to keep yourself from dying in the wildy:
1) Get a few close friends to go with you. Especially good if you have a friend that is a high level player.
2) Bring tons of food. Best is swordfish(f2p) or sharks(p2p).
And a good way to keep your good items (rune items) is to make a full set of your highest armor (mine would be full steel and a mithril weapon) and take those up north. Yes, it will be weaker than if you used rune, but if you die, no big deal.
This tip works very well if your in varrock and about to go to wildy. As you know, there's a huge crowd near wildy area. anyways, let's say i see someone i want to kill, and they're about to go to wildy. The first thing you do is add them to your friends list immediately!!! when they go to wildy, you want to follow them. but dont right click and follow, lol. just wander around for a bit. if ur lucky, ur target'll go east. just wander around for a little bit, where the bar is. if they spot you, go into the bar. so they go north. wander around, follow them, and when they reach high enough wildy... well you know the rest lol. if you want even more wildy tips, add darkseriath1. i use these ideas alot, and i can even tell you how to make a decent amount of gold doing this, but that i can only say on rs lol
i got tips 4 u noobs. always bring food...best food 2 bring 4 non members is sordfishes 4 members sharks or manta ray i prefer manta ray. if u dont want to die then find a good spot wheres theres alot of tree and run into it then the pkers will take a long time to run thru the trees.then u would get 10seconds 4 u to log off.better thing is that turn chats off.if u want to fite and not lose ur items then u should bring like iron or steel things and 3 other better armor or wepon. if u hav lv 25 prayer then u should turn on protect item so u can keep 1 xtra item.if ur members then there is a teleport lever near the mage arena. there r free steel legs and gold ores at thr ruins.
Hey, people. If you're ever in need of food for wildy, but everything's too expensive, buy my lobbies! I'll sell them for a discount. Cooked lobbies, only 100gp each. usually, COOKED lobbies are around 200-300gp. but if ur going to wild, and u need some food, add
Darkseriath1 (I wrote something 2 posts above)
OR
icearrow1521
remember, u can buy my lobbies. even if ur going to wildy later, just preserve some (note, if anyone else is buying some before u, then ull have to wait *sorry*)
Watch out. Once I was in lvl 1 wildy just above varrock and I attacked somebody. But it turned out they had a bunch of ranger freinds scattered around. so after a few hits all these arrows started flyin towards me. Oh ya, this isnt on the same subject but... I was in the same place and i attacked a lvl 40 who only had full iron. when we were at low health he pulled out and addy scimmy(he was only using mith). So remember LOOKS CAN BE DECIEVING
Hey I have some tips for new players for the Wild(lvl 3 players). First, sell all the stuff you start out with. make sure you go to the specialty shops to do this. then you should have enough for bronze pl8 and legs. Then buy a bronze or iron weapon. Then get defence and attack to 5. then unequip everything and go into the Wild. Make sure no one follows you. Stay away from mosnters and run through the graveyard. You should find a steel dagger. equip it. Next find some ruins and get steel legs that are there. Also theres gold ore there. Then speed back to non-wild area. There now uyou have steel legs and a dagger an money from selling the gold ore.
Ok i have a tip for Player Killers.
Go into maybe level 20 wilderness, bring your best armor and weapons, but dont equip it.
Then once you find a player you know you can beat, wait until he/she attacks you. Then, equip your items and weapons, and watch em scatter. It's a great trick to get some good PK'ing in.Also, before you put your armor on during the fight be sure to set on Run so your opponent can't escape.
Happy Hunting people :P
Theres also runite mines in the wildy
i got a good way of making money if you're a member. if you're a member go to world 18 and walk to edgeville. then go to the wilderness and don't bring anything with you. when people die they will drop items such as sharks and you pick up items and sell it to make as much money as you want. the players drop good things so you may want to do because i made 1,000,000 gold in about 20 days from doing that. but beware there are many high level players and many low levels so if you go you should probably want to get your combat to level 60-70 before you do this. well have a good time.
a great way to save yourself in wildy is to have back up to help you in a tight situation on your freinds list
heres a tip wen i go in wildy i go to the border for nonmembys and folow it on the nonmemby side until u find the greater demons and look for the red dot on the map.there u will find 1 or 2 blood runes and they respwan fast and r close to the mage areana for u godstaff magers
heres a tip for the wildy bring just any armour you can make and go in wildy bring rune scimi and rune 2h wield rune scimi and fight somebody till they are low health when u are just about 2 hit pull out rune 2h and u may hit a high hit which could finish them when a scimi could not .
