On Scamming, part 4

Part One of this set of entries on Scamming can be found here.
Part Two can be found here
Part Three is right here

And this is Part Four, which is just an extension of some of the Scam information I've heard about and seen tried myself. This post is for EDUCATIONAL purposes, meant to help people AVOID being scammed. Please do not try to use this information to scam others, as it is against the rules and Jagex will have every right to can your account.

"Item Duplication" / Alt + F4 scam

This is a scam that has been around for a long long time. Ever since Windows 3.1 came out and folks first started getting online with text-based modem dial-up programs to get onto the Internet to play free online multiplayer role playing games (text-based back then of course). OTHER KEY COMBINATIONS MAY BE USED. Pay attention to the premise of this scam and be careful.

In short, the scam is this:

Another player tells you that you can duplicate all of your items in your inventory by dropping everything on the ground and pressing Alt+F4 on your keyboard.

Don't worry, they tell you - they can't see your items for 60 seconds after you drop them, giving you "plenty of time" to pick them back up, including the duplicates.

Only, the problem is that Alt+F4 on a Windows machine shuts down the active window. If you've never tried it before, bookmark this site and then test it out. Your browser will close, and you'll have to re-open it to continue reading this entry.

By the time you get your Runescape window back up and you get logged back in, your equipment is gone, and so is your "friend".

Rare Zamorak Wine

I've heard of a scam which involves leading uninformed players to their death and looting the corpse afterwards, and it doesn't surprise me, so I thought I'd share.

The scam works this way:

The Scammer tells you that there's a rare object that's reset right now that you can only get once in the entire time you play the game, which is why he can't get it, but why he's offering to help you find it.

Scammer has you follow him (or her) and brings you to a place where there are a bunch of Zamorak Wizards milling around, non-aggressive-like. And there's a jug of Zamorak wine just sitting there, perhaps on an altar. All you have to do is go in there and grab it, your new "friend" advises.

So, you go in and grab it, at which point all of the Wizards get mad and begin firing upon you with strong magical attacks.

Presumably, you die, and leave your corpse for your new "friend" to loot freely.

Conclusion

Those are the new scams that had not been mentioned in previous entries. Don't get caught by them!

Part Five of this On Scamming topic is currently unplanned.

Knowledge is power. There are so many young people playing this game, that they are easy victims of these confidence scams. However, spending too much fake money on a common item is a fairly harmless lesson. Chances are its a nine year old ripping off a seven year old. Therefore, it is important for all to have a better understanding of how the scams work. (If it sounds too good to be true then it is not true.)

However, victims of such basic and simple frauds are demonstrating naivity that scares me and most of the adult community regarding online intelligence. You can not put trust into someone you know nothing about. OF the 300K rune scapers. I know the true identity of 3 of them. Myself and two others. I assume that all the rest of you are freaks and are not who you present yourselves to be. It is a level of protection I have to prevent any harm coming my way.

Any person you interact with online should be dealt with care. With so many young people falling to such simple tricks, I must question the where abouts of parents. Teach your childern how to protect themselves online. To give out any personal information, passwords or anything must be never occur.

Anyway, mine hard, kill lots of lessor demons, and have fun. Remember this is a role playing game but it is still a game in the end. Enjoy yourself.

Hey , thought i'ed lay down a few "rules" some of you should follow. I'm level 102 and i've been playing for aproximetley 4 years. Not only do you have to look out for noobish scams or tricks but you MUST watch out for what your downloading. To tell the truth i forgot to search a file about 3 weeks ago and when i tried to get on, my character was in use. and once i finally got on my full dharoks ( 6.5mill) and dragon battle axe(150k) and dragon ammulet(100k) was gone. Unfortinetley jagex has a new loggin screen and does not tell you the last logged in ip adress ( in which i would have put to use my ip searching unit) and seen if they lived around me , a "Freind" guessing my password , or if it was a dirty file. LUkcily jagex has comishoned the bank pin in which they were unable to guess , so i still have 30mill in C A S H. If anyone wants to contact me to talk for whatever reason im --- Carnage 91

theres a new scam out called the team scam im ashamed my friends invented this one but this is how it works ok for example:

1 person says buying black bead 50k
n then down the road u have sum1 selling a black bead for 5k therefore people think that they r gonna make 45k buy the 5k black bead n get ripped off....however they usually do it with more expensive items like trading a rune pl8 for a party hat n having sum guy selling a rune pl8 for 250k hope this helps your quest to stop scamming!!!

I know another scam. you kinda listed it but it is better than those and most people wont even catch it till the scammer is logged out.
A guy offers you a rune pickaxe at an incraedable deal or 15-20k. you think wow i can buy that and sell it for 32k. so you trade him. he puts up a noted rune pick and you put up the 20k. you both hit accept. on the secont screen he hits decline and says "oops" or "sorry wrong button" the next time you trade you put up the 20k and he puts up a mith pick. you dont see the differance and hit accept. he logs out and you are 18.5k poorer. well, next time check your trades.

O.Q; Hey I've heard of another one, not listed here... Ok, you trade with some one higher level than you (usualy), he puts up a rune scimmy (noted), and tells you 15k for it... then you put up the money, he switches it with and iron scimmy (noted), (this is very hard to notice, especialy if you have the lighting on dark)... you then accept,.. and totaly get ripped... >.>; trust me, this works, I've had it done to me b4....
